AKC board of directors

Congratulations to Dr. Newman, the MCOA delegate on his re-election to the AKC board of Directors.
I wonder what his position is/ will be on the PRIME pogram? Might the fancy actually get some info on this or will it remain a secret ? Will the AKC still be the champion of the pure bred dog, or will mixed breeds continue to infiltrate ? How about dog name changes? Can that terrible mistake be rolled back? Is the AKC going to continue down the path to being the registry that caters to "high volume breeders" and mixed breeds in the name of increased revenue ?

Erika M.

http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=4069

 American Kennel Club News Article
AKC Announces Board of Directors Election Results

Date of Article: March 09, 2010

-- Dr. Charles Garvin, Dr. William Newman
& Patricia Scully Elected --

The Annual Meeting of the AKC Delegates took place on March 9, 2010.
Opinions on improving a breed

Quote:

The Europeans also have what are, in effect, 'notes for judges' which lay down certain details which are considered criteria essential to the breed. One of these refer to the 'Bite', where judges are told to penalise an undershot jaw, and , as is usual with the Europeans, all teeth should be present in the jaw, to the extent that if teeth are missing the animal can be barred from breeding, and cannot become a Champion.

Some countries, such as France, have a system of 'Confirmation' in order for dogs to be passed fit for breeding. A dog or bitch must either be placed 'Very Good' or higher, or be examined by a breed expert in order to qualify. The persons authorised to carry out confirmations are registered by the French Kennel Club (SCC) and are either breed specialists who have to undergo a course of training, or the All-Rounders licensed for the particular breed. While this does have pitfalls, at least most of the Mastiffs used for breeding are of reasonable quality.

From the Interpretation of the Standard...B.Baxter

Dogs really can tell if people are good or bad

So Harley growled at her first person yesterday. It was my ex husband who came here to visit my kids. He came up to my car and Harley didn't like that at all. This is the first time she has ever met him and just a little glance back he was an abusive partner/father. So I don't know if it was a bad thing or not but I kinda felt glad that she was being protective of me. And of course I do not encourage her to do this. I just held her leash and told her to hush and she calmed down.

first dog fight

Chaos had his first dog fight last night...... We were walking in the park near our house when a couple of rat dogs (off leash) came running over. Chaos greeted them politely, neutral tail, wagging and butt sniffing. Then one of the rat dogs started growling and launched himself at Chaos' face (drawing blood).
Obviously they were aware of their dog's tendency, because the owner grabbed him right up, where he flailed and nipped at his owner trying to get down. The other rat dog was loose, still darting forward and back, nipping and barking at Chaos.
I yelled at them to get their dog under control and Chaos started growling / barking and lunged forward at the remaining loose dog. He pulled me off my feet and dragged me towards the couple and their dogs.
I held on for dear life, and yelled at Chaos to "down". To my surprise and amazement he went right down on his belly. The couple leashed their dogs, glared at me and walked away. No apology, no NOTHING!
I was really rattled and upset by the event, but thought Chaos behaved really well all things considered. I was sooooooo grateful he stopped, because if he had hurt the dog or owner, even in self defense it would have been all his fault......

Teri

Upset tummy

My poor Harley has an upset tummy. I had gotten some bacon treats and they didnt agree with her. She has always has a sensitive tummy, but usually little treats dont bother her.

Well last night she threw up after eating her dinner, then again sometime in the middle of the night. It wasnt a large amount, nor was it undigested food.

I think her tummy is still upset. Whats the best way to soothe it?

Just 24hr water only? I have had to that before when she was a pup. She snarfed some of my cousin's dog's food and she threw up for about 12hrs. Vet told me water only for 24hrs.

Should I get some pedialyte?

She is acting normal of course...just dont want to further irritate her tummy. Any suggestions would be great. I hate not feeding her...
Help! Is this normal for toenails????

Our dog is having trouble with one of his nails. He is still a puppy, so we are still working on getting him comfortable with the nail clippers and grinder, etc. We've been doing lots of positive reinforcement with that. He will allow me (Mom) to clip his toenails--if I'm quick and there are lots of treats. Dad is not allowed, according to him. The last few times I've cut them, I noticed splitting, etc. One of the nails on the back foot has split down to a nub, and I'm really worried about him.

He is fear-reactive with strangers (we've been seeing a behaviorist for this), so going to the vet for clippings seems to be out of the question.

WHAT DO I DO??? Do I need to get him to the vet to try to let her see it? I'm not even sure if he will allow her to get close to him. This is so frustrating. Any advice?

IMG_0184.JPG

IMG_0187.JPG

IMG_0189.JPG

I saw this on my local news website and thought it might be a point of interest to some. I also looked to see if Gloria Davis was listed as a missing person and she was not. From some of the things I have read, she could be anywhere from Virginia to Florida to Tennessee and even as far west as New Mexico. This NamUs database could be worth the Anderson County authorities' time to look into.

http://www.wral.com/news/national_world/national/story/7182889/
