Hey Dave,

I think what you're doing is a great idea... and ought to be taken up by other groups!

Have you considered raising money for Mastiff Rescue in Canada though? The Canadian Mastiff Club & the Mastiff Club of Western Canada both do rescue not only in our country, but in our half of it as well.

Goodness knows there are enough BYBs here in Alberta alone whose puppies end up in rescue situations all the time.

hi Caleya, I have offered to physically help with mcowc and was told they did not need help, that was as hands on which I really want to do. I certainly will be getting north of the border soon with fund raising, but the condition of the dogs showing up in ssmr and mrof really have an urgency.

Please call me if help is needed closer to home..780-662-4832.....

I know from the one rescue we did, watching her confidence build daily was awesome, it was extremely rewarding

Hi Dave,
Thank you for doing this auction for Mastiff Rescue of Florida.  This has been a very hard year for all the rescues and these auctions are greatly appreciated.
We just heard today of 3 more dogs that will be coming in...where we will put them who knows..but it seems to work out because we have so many dedicated volunteers.  We always need Fosters as they are the true lifelines for these mastiff's.  So many of the shelters in South Florida have us on a strict time frame once they notify the rescue we must have the dog moved in 24 hours.
We are getting many older dogs that we would like to find retirement homes for...just amazing to me how people can pitch a dog they have had for 8, 9, 10 and 11 years. but they do and they are the true treasures of the breed.  I have several of the geriatric treasures living with us and they are a joy to have around!
The leerburg Videos and CDs are EXCELLENT.....I have used them many times and offered them to adopters.
Sundstone designs are absolutely beautiful and unique.!

Please know that the money raised by this auction is needed and we truly appreciate it.   Dave you are doing a fabulous thing!

Again, Many many thanks,

I know I will catch the fall out from this,,,,,,,but right now, with other more important things going on with my life,,,,,I really don't give a rats behind! It just seems like we All need to sit back ,,,,imam as guilty as you for ai buy my dogs from breeders

Sue, if everyone purchased from REPUTABLE breeders rescue probably would not be so overrun.  I have never considered myself guilty when I have introduced a new mastiff to my home, and when I did breed I did the best I could to make sure that he/she went into a forever home.
I find the problem to be more in the area of buying from non breeders, people out to make a quick dollar, mills etc.  I think that most of the people on the forum care about their dogs enough to stand behind any pups they sell and are willing to take them back if things dont work out.
By saying you consider all of us guilty, including yourself, I am afraid I really do disagree, by buying from the unregistered people and the fast buck crowd, then you are keeping a market open for them to do business, and people like Dave run auctions, and hundreds of others donate time and effort in rescuing the results.
Give me a breeder who cares any day.
Janine.

I'm trying Pam...  well said Janine

Sue, if for example all the breeders who are members of just this forum stopped breeding, one more mill would fill the gap. If each of us did not do anything, would the mills or byb'rs step up and help rescues?

this is not something we are doing because we have to much money, we work seasonally, my wife works winters on an organic farm, I pick up what I can in the winters, for us it is important to contribute... what do you do?

I give to the local shelters,,,,,,paper towels, dog food, kitty litter and cat food. I donate so many hours a week to going up and playing / walking the dogs. I get my cats from shelters. I try NOT to buy from BYB or puppy mills, I won't even shop at a pet shop that sells pups. I am one person and I do what I can do,,,,was a breeder/shower along time back. NEVER made one dime off of the two litters my girls had, in fact lost money. I thought my girls where breed worthy, they were being shown and both had majors under their belt. They were bred to top Ch of the day. Back in the 70's health testing was NOT a major concern then. My pup Dozer was from a breeder which to no one else fault but my own was not a breeder I would have picked if I researched
Come on,,,,,3 litters in one month! Hmmmm, don't think she is out to make money, I am sure SHE wants to better the breed,,,,no health testing, doesn't want to put her dogs under the stress.
Sorry to vent on here, just some major things going on in my life and I guess this post just happened to have the bad luck of being my whipping post.
We all do what we think is the best, so who am I to say anything,,,
No hard feelings I hope
Have a great day and thank the Lord you woke up to see it....for I surely thank him every day

Hi Sue, certainly no hard feelings from me, hope it is the same for you.
I know there are breeders out there, registered ones who do pump out litter after litter, happens all over the world and we have our fair share in Australia too.  No, they are not in it for the betterment of the breed, I fully agree with you there, that is why I put reputable in capitals, I think most of us know who is who.
Hope everything works out for you, and venting does help.

Hi Don,

Every bit helps!  We rescued a mastiff yesterday that escaped from a mill in South Florida that makes your heart sick.  Her canine teeth have been cut off, some of the rest of her teeth filed down to nothing all so she could not hurt another dog, her eyes are swollen shut with infection, ears are infected, terrible skin and very little hair.  I know where she came from and they are tied to trees, given a 5 gal bucket of food  and the same of water once a week with a piece of plywood for shelter.. She is a lucky girl to of found her way to us.
I think what we need to do..is change this law across the country that allows this treatment of animals in this manner.  As long as there is food and water and some shelter it is on that fine line that animal control can do nothing.

Did I mention this individual takes a PVC pipe or metal pipe  and rams it down their throats to rupture the vocal cords..but of course no one sees that as that is behind closed doors.

Don, Thank you so much as these animals are getting hit hard and the rescues are putting everything they have in them.  This gal is definitely worth saving. Her tail never stopped wagging and she put her paw on you to continue loving on her.

As soon as I get all the photos downloaded, I will post a few photos of her.

I am sorry that I took 2 reply areas...but here are a couple of other shots of Minnie..
I think the rescues should get together and use these dogs to go to their Senators offices ...and get the people on all these boards to sign a petition and write letters.
I can tell you right now there are at least 6 more dogs where Minnie came from that have not escaped yet....and this individual is advertising on the internet for puppies at $1400.00.

I don't understand Pam, why can't a.c. or the police remove the remaining dogs, there is evidence of neglect, and proof of cruelty....  I have sat here deleting what I want to say over and over...no words...

Dave,
No one understands......but it happens they are returned!  That is why the law must be changed.  If she were to go to a shelter, this dog was not micro chipped, he will never step forward on her...so no one knows.  When animal control goes there, I am sure they have fresh food and water with plywood or metal over them.  The ones that look bad are hidden.  He Ivomecs them once a month, they have no parasites or heartworms....and this is the rainy season in Florida, they have skin problems they are outside dogs....animal control is too busy policing all the others, then to drive back into the country down a dirt road.  No one complains anymore as the dogs have been de-barked.  This is not animal control's fault.
We are trying to decide on how to go about this so that we get our point across  and put as much power behind it to  get this law changed.  There is a fine line here....I spoke with our Sherriff the other day and he said...we need more teeth in the law.
I think if all the rescues band together on this, hopefully we can get something done.   Unfortunately, till that happens, we are faced with many Minnies and SSMR will get many too.

Like Dave, you see the photos and so much goes through your mind and you start to write something, but in reality, you are just speechless.
I just dont get that some people can treat another living being like this, regardless of species or breed, how people can be so different in their feelings and treatment of animals.
It really does make you feel helpless, frustrated, so angry and depressed.
I wish Governments around the world would realise how big the "dog fancy" is, if they want votes, do something proactive instead of letting all this happen.
Oscar's Law is having their rally next Sunday, it is nation wide this year, I will be there waving my placard and calling for puppy farms to close for sure.

I was the one who initially discovered Minnie , I received a call from a friend who was concerned about a dog who wandered to his house and parked herself in his garage. I could'nt believe what poor shape this sweet girl was in . She was severely under weight seeing 5-6 ribs. Her eyes were so gooped over that  her eyesight was severely compromised , and her skin really bad and the worst was the teeth upper and lower canines seem to have been cut in half .We gave her food  she ate like you could'nt believe, water ,and shelter . The next day to the vet she received meds and a bath . She is now at another volunteers place where she will recover , she is such a sweet girl . here are some pics.

We do not breed often, but we do our best to breed top quality mastiffs
with excellent pedigrees to back them up. All breedings are carefully planned to produce
the very best mastiffs, sound in both body and mind, beautiful and strong,
representing the true mastiff standard.

We fully test our dogs. We believe that a person that "just wants a pet" has a right
to own a beautiful, well bred dog that is sound and healthy
every bit as much as someone wanting a "show dog".

couldn't this dog be used as evidence? Have the sheriff/judge issue a legal
document to raid the place. If all the dogs have the teeth filed like that it
should be a tip-off to the authorities.

How about having a Fire Chief check out the property?  They can look for fire hazards and happen to see something and report it to the Sheriffs Department.

OMG, MINNIE.  Bless her heart.  The poor girl, I am glad she is now safe.  I worry for the others on the property.  Tracy is right, someone, somehow needs to hit the people that have these dogs and are selling these dogs where it hurts... The Wallet.  They need to be turned in for tax evasion... making money and not claiming it... how does one do that ?

Hi,
I need ideas about changing the law.
This guy has gotten his dogs back in the past. Remember, food, water and shelter and the rest is a fine line, he knows the law most of them do.

I know breeder's fight licensing, but you know that might be the way to shut these people down...give it some teeth and maybe require a visit by the county to give the approval once a year...maybe even require a Veterinarian's letter too. I keep thinking, if you are a reputable breeder what you worry about.

Give me some thoughts...this is just not in Florida..many states are this way. I truly would like to take this on. We have so many good people on the Forum and I think the power to get loads of people behind this.

Pam

I looked into that , licensing as a kennel. because my girls live in the house that ment total inspection, electrical through plumbing, and outside my dog house would have to be on permit, at the time we only had the two girls,

as a 'hobby' I am legaly allowed 30 ( thirty) dogs before I need a permit, no limit on pups under I think 4 months.

but to make it hard on these ^%$$*  I would jump through any flaming hoops

as far as a vet's letter goes, I am more than happy to give out their #, half of the girls working there reconize my voice when I call

You need to get the general public on your side to change any laws, power of the people etc.
Do you have any prime time current affairs shows on TV that may pick up the story, tell them about the loopholes and then show them the dogs and ask them if they would be willing to send her back.  If you can get media coverage push the point of everyone writing to the government to help protect these animals.
