I have been looking at many pictures of mastiffs and notice that there are huge callouses on the elbows. Is there a way to avoid that from happeining?

All Mastiffs have callouses to some degree. It is because of the tremendous weight on those pressure points. There si one thing you can do to make sure they do not get huge. Make sure your dog has something soft to lie on - but then on hot days they will move it aside to lay on cool tiles, etc. LOL! Many people swear by creams and ointments - I personally have not had a lot of success. Dogs who tend to flop down instead of just lay down will generally have larger callouses, and can even get hygromas.

Mastiffs flop? In my mind, they would lie down slowly because of the weight.
My current dog prefers to lie on tile only after being outside when it's real, real hot. Other than that she prefers being on a large area rug or a raised bed of some sort because it gives under the weight.

they do flop and sometimes they flip too :-)
Sometimes they crash down - that's when you need to worry about hygromas.
I would bitch and nag my puppy when he crashed down and he stopped LOL not sure if there was a connection.
They can be very dramatic creatures especially in the hot weather and when growing and when they are very tired. You need to make sure you don't end up under them when they come crashing down that can be dangerous for you - my boy came on the bed once and tried to crash down on my chest LOL He really likes to flip into my legs too.
