If you have a good Mastiff vet PLEASE list his/her name here with contact information and city and state. It is so hard for new people especially to locate a good vet that is experienced with Mastiffs. This would be such a great help. When we breeders sell puppies - to be able to refer the new puppy owners to a good vet in their area would be so helpful.

We do not breed often, but we do our best to breed top quality mastiffs
with excellent pedigrees to back them up. All breedings are carefully planned to produce
the very best mastiffs, sound in both body and mind, beautiful and strong,
representing the true mastiff standard.
We fully test our dogs. We believe that a person that "just wants a pet" has a right
to own a beautiful, well bred dog that is sound and healthy
every bit as much as someone wanting a "show dog".

Here is my veterinarian's information. She is pretty far from all of you but, who knows, if one day you are selling a puppy in the North Suburbs of Montreal, it can be helpfull. Does anyone happen to know of any in Michigan? I simply cannot find anyone listed that specifies large breeds and the babies of my friends and family members are definitely not large or giant breed dogs. I've been trying the net for days and I don't know if I'm not using the correct search words or what?

Cali, I think that Madigan Mastiffs is in Michigan. Maybe you could call and ask her if she knows a good Vet. She is a very nice person.

Dr Victor Perger Fairwood Animal Hospital West 317 Hastings Rd Spokane WA 99218 509-467-0566 Dr P is a great all around vet (although not a proponent for raw feeding). He does have quite a bit of Mastiff experience in his practice (although not an expert), but he DOES listen to his clients and is willing to follow their recommendations regarding the treatment of THEIR dogs (like with anesthesia, drugs, etc). He is also an EXCELLENT repro vet. I cannot rave enough about him in this field. His rapport with his staff, the animals, and easy going way with the clients make it much less stressful for everyone concerned. We've used him for both of Gracie's SI's with great success. He also lets you sit in and observe the procedures as they are done. Anita Sanders Rainy Days Mastiffs

She has been doing mastiffs for years. Studied her breeding under Dr. Hutchison. She has a wonderful breeding program. Knows about doses for medicating mastiffs.

South Central PA, also not far from the Maryland border Harrisburg PA Area
Winding Hill Veterinary Clinic Dr Douglas Benner 1424 S. Market St Mechanisburg PA 17055 717 697-4481
Dr Benner has been caring for my Mastiffs since 2001, the office was great with Daghda and his congestive heart failure, I never had a problem making an emergency appointment for Daghda, Morrigan or Ana. He is a very personable Dr and the office staff have also been very helpful
Dr Tagg is also another great vet

South Suburbs Of Chicago Illinois
Dr. Martin Midlothian Animal Clinic 4554 147th Midlothian IL 60445 (708) 371-1991
Very good Vet. Has been very good with our 2 Chows and is excellent with George (although George isn't to found of him cause that's the man who sticks him with needles ) Has several clients that have mastiffs, has been very helpful when we found out about allergies George had and when he was diagnosed with hygroma he knew right away what it was & gave real good tips & ideas.

This vet has been mine for almost 30 years. Dr. James is semi-retired but still comes in just to vet my 9 1/2 yo and Dr. Jason takes care of the 2 1/2 yo. They will let you set up payments and let you stay with your babies and even let you help if you have the stomach for it through all procedures. They are open on Saturday's until 2:00 also and you can start dropping off your best friend for procedures about 5:30 or 6:00 am last time I checked and someone is generally still there and able to answer questions until about 7:00 pm last time I checked. They are not the most expensive in town but not the cheapest either and will set up payments. They will also match on-line prices with a copy from the website. They will work with you on just about anything and are very honest and forthcoming with responses - and will tell you if they need to do research before they respond. They have brought into their clinic other professionals for my babies when they thought they needed more help and knowledge. This father and son team are just awesome!!!! I couldn't have handled the big dog things without them.

We've moved a few times in the last several years, but here are three vets in three different cities with Mastiff experience that we have loved, and so have our Mastiffs!
Dr. Stephen Brammeier Kingsbury Animal Hospital St. Louis, Missouri 63130 314-726-6251
Dr. Jennifer Mleckoday West Chelsea Veterinary Clinic 248 26th St NYC, NY 212-645-2767

Hello everyone, For those of you that live in the New England area, I have to share a great experience that I had with Dr. Kenneth Abrams, a Veterinary Ophthalmologist, located in Warwick, RI. If you ever are faced with a serious eye issue, I highly recommend his practice. http://www.peteyespecialist.com/ The past few days have been nerve-wracking for me, but last night I was able to breathe a sigh of relief. On August 9, I returned from a show, and my husband told me that there was something wrong with my veteran girl’s eye. Although she was running back and forth at the gate waiting for me, I could see that it looked as if she had suddenly developed “cherry eye.” On August 11, my husband brought her to see our general vet, who “thought” it could be a “cherry eye” but wasn’t sure. She prescribed steroidal drops as well as a/b drops. The vet scheduled a follow-up for Nibby in two weeks, and said to my husband, “if it’s not better by then, we’ll have to figure something else out.” I was like, “what the heck kind of response is that????” but, I figured I’d give it a couple of days. By last Sunday (one week after onset) the eye was much, much worse, to the point that the “cherry eye” looked to be completely obscuring her vision. After spending Sunday evening searching out Veterinary Eye Specialists, I called Dr. Abrams practice first thing Monday morning. They were fully booked, but said they could call me if they had a cancellation. Well – within 10 minutes they called me back, and agreed to see Nibby that afternoon at 3:30. Upon exam, Dr. Abrams explained that Nibby didn’t have “cherry eye”, but rather a large tumor attached to her third eye-lid. The tumor was completely enveloping her entire eye, so that she had no vision – he couldn’t even see the eyeball for examination. He recommended surgery. I questioned Dr. Abrahams about his experience with large animals, his experience with this type of surgery and his anesthesia protocol. I was comfortable with all the answers so we scheduled Nibby’s surgery for yesterday afternoon. I dropped her off at 1 pm. By 3:30 I received a call, that the surgery was a success and she was ready to go home. The tumor had grown measurably just since Monday, and necessitated removal of the entire third eyelid, but had not attached to the eye itself. Nibby’s vision was restored. Dr. Abrams sent the third eyelid was sent for biopsy, but did say that even if it is cancerous, he is confident that it is most likely of a type that does not migrate to other areas of the body. There are no sutures, the wound was cauterized. Aside from being sleepy, Nibby had a good night last night, and woke up feeling good today. It was also funny, because Nibby has two skin tags, one attached to one of her nipples, which hangs much lower than the rest. It is kind of odd to look at, but has never bothered her, and I always looked at it is part of who she is…. In my eyes, she will always be beautiful. Anyway, Dr. Abrams told me that while she was out, he took the opportunity to give her a “breast lift” at no additional charge. He removed the two skin tags, so she now has the figure of a six year old. My males love her new boob job! I have to keep reminding them that she is their grandmother and great grandmother, respectively. Anyway, I know this is a lengthy post, but I wanted to share my positive experience with this Specialist in Rhode Island. If you are ever faced with a serious eye issue, and need a good specialist, call these guys – they are great. Dr. Abrams even called my house at 8:45 last night, to check on how Nibby was doing post-op, how awesome is that??? Thanks – Margaret Warfield.

And a little farther north in Stuart , Stuart Animal Hospital 3003 South Federal Highway Stuart, FL 34994 (772)287-2242 ) Dr, Katz and Dr. Ortiz are very good as well that's where we (Pombo) and myself take our crews that total 17 and most all mastiff owners in the area go. I know it's a little ride but it's worth it.

Brunswick Vet Hospital Jay Schuff/Becca Hahn 131 Olympia Park Road Grass Valley, Ca 95945 (530) 477-2287
Jay and Becca have over 25 years of mastiff experience. I especially appreciate Jays surgical knowledge and skills when it comes to our big dogs. They have mastiff people coming from all over California and out of state to their clinic. Also a very compassionate, competent staff.
Highly recommended !!!

Glad to see all of the responses from Central Florida. Does anyone happen to know of any vets with mastiff experience in the immediate Orlando vicinity? Our girl needs xrays for a limp and our vet is just too expensive. May be willing to drive to some of the other recommendations but wanted to make sure no one had suggestions closer to home first. Thanks in advance for the ideas.

If anyone needs a Cardiologist in South Florida, we have one here in Homestead who is the most educated, incredible, loving, devoted Doctor I have ever met. I believe he is the only Cardiologist in Dade & Monroe Counties. They also have an Opthamologist and Dermatologist on staff. Their website is http://www.vetsi.com
His name and address are Dr. Robert Prosek Veterinary Specialists 91 NE 6 Street Homestead, FL. 33030 (305-246-1701

Jennt - how expensive is your vet in Sache and how competent do your rate her staff in handling big dogs?

Cheryl, I'm new to the board, but if I were you I would ask that question in a new thread if you don't see a vet in those areas here. I think you will have a much better chance at a response...good luck!!

Does anybody know of a good Mastiff-familiar vet in the Houston, TX area, preferably west Houston? We're moving there next month and I'd like to have a few lined up for "meet and greets" before deciding.

North Florida (Jacksonville): Fantastic Vets, two locations: Vet: Michael Davis, and Kelly Kirk 12837 N Main St (904-757-4254)
And second location: PC Hightman specializes in holistic, herbal, acupuncture treatments. (acupuncture really helped my 13yr old Winston!) 4605 Brentwood Ave. (904-354-0547)
Also cannot recommend these internal specialists enough (they provide acupuncture, wellness, allergry, onocology, surgical, and repro specialists and know Mastiffs/Danes):
NFVS - Jacksonville 3444 Southside Blvd. Suite 102 (904- 646-1279)
They do have a second location, but I have never personally been: NFVS - Orange Park 275 Corporate Way Suite 100 (904-278-0287)
It has been my exeperience that you should have your everyday vet and they should be excellent, but you should also have your specialists (and lined up prior to getting your first pup!) that you can also trust and depend on for when things go wrong. As stated all over the forum one vet does not know everything, but then you do not always need a know it all vet, just one that knows when to refer out.
