Hi! So we just got a pair of mastiff cross puppies on Saturday! Mamma was a Neo,Bull,English mastiff X Great dane their father was a pure bred english mastiff. So these boys are going to get big! Mamma looked more like a great dane than mastiff! There was 11 puppies and the lady spent over 100$ a month on food! Wow! We originally only wanted one puppy but when we got there we decided to buy two! So we got one fawn male and one Brindle Male!
BrimStone: Buddy: They are HUGE for a 6 week old puppy! they look at LEAST 8 weeks in size! They're real cuddlers when they're tired! We haven't had any accidents yet. Or at least not alot! Only a piddle so far. They were up every hour since four in the morning! Geeze! I'm going to be tired! But I love them! Brim has a more Neo mastiff face to him.(His face is all wrinkley!). Buddy loves to cuddle and has a darker blackish brown stripe down his back! He's more of the sleepy, I just wanna cuddle boy! Shhh! They're sleeping!!
So these are MY first mastiff and my parents first mastiffs as well. How do we get them to sleep through the night? We were thinking of no food or water till you wake up in the morning starting at 7 or 9 at night and taking them out right before bed like always. But we don't want to have to deal with getting up with them every hour or so. It's tiring! They just cry and cry and cry until you take them outside to pee. Help!
Also,Food. What is the best type of food for these boys? Right now they're on nutri source large breed puppy food as suggested brand by great dane lady. Any help? We'd prefer not to switch brands but we would switch them to the adult food. I heard to much protein and calcium makes them grow to fast and can cause problems?
Thanks!

Very cute puppies you have! To answer some of your questions, 6 weeks to me seems a little early to me to expect them to sleep through the night withought needing to go potty. Some states its actually illegal to sell/rehome a puppy before it is 8 weeks old! Even though its just a couple of weeks, those 2 weeks are crucial in their emotional developement. They learn a lot from mom & siblings during this time. Not to be mean, but the potty training issue is something you should've already researched & considered BEFORE getting a puppy! They are just like babies, they will need care through the night also. It comes with the territory. Usually you need to wake up every 1-2 hours to let them out until their bladders are mature enough to be able to hold it through the night. You need to either buy a book or do a search on house training/ crate training. You can do a search on this forum also. As for the food, you might want to ask your breeder what she recommends. She should've given you a puppy packet on feeding instructions, etc. Since they are of mixed breeds, if she has bred this before, she should be familiar with their growth rayes, etc to be able to advise you on their diet.

This is what I would recommend. It won't change the fact that you need to take your puppies out a LOT, but it will give them a safe place to be when they are inside and you can't have eyes on them and they won't have to be confined to just a crate. It's my favorite way to house train a puppy. Any puppy advice by Dr. Ian Dunbar is excellent. He's a puppy genius!

The doggy playroom works wonders! Congratulations on your little boys. Please try to be patient with them. They don't have a whole lot of control at this point in their little lives and sleep deprivation comes with raising any "babies." Think of infants and diaper changes...lots and lots of diaper changes. At least you won't have to discard all those used yucky diapers...Keep it consistent, use one area of your yard and you'll see results. Please don't let them wander to "go" or you'll have land mines of poop to dodge the whole time you have them. Good luck. They're cute.

I agree with Jeanine on taking them to one spot only! This will also help when it's raining outside or there's snow or some reason they don't want to be outside. If you take them right to their potty spot in the yard, they know it's time to do their business, & you know exactly where it is to clean it. The rest of the yard is a clean play area. =)

They are way too young to "hold" it and should not be expected to. You have to sacrifice and dedicate yourself through this baby period. You bought them now it's time to face the responsibility. Most states won't even let puppies go under 8 weeks and your mixes look tiny and needy, so good luck and take your time raising them. Gina

They have a crate, one of those barred collapsable ones. We got addivce from someone who said to ''let them fight it out early because when they're big and playing it's gonna be scarey sometimes'' I guess what he ment by this was that by letting them fight it out early they discover what hurts the other and them selves?
We have had other large breed dogs before, Rottie and a newfie so we're not new to the drool factor or even the big dog factor. Last night was WAY better than preveous nights. No food and a little water (It's hot) after 9 and they go out right before we go to bed. They were up just about three-four times. 2,5,7ish and 8 before we got up!But at 5-6 in the morning they just want to play!!!
The lady has never bred this mix before. What did you guys feed your big dogs?

let them fight WHAT out? They are fighting at this age? Six weeks of course is too young to be away from mom and littermates, as others have said. so for the next two weeks I would try to replicate a " litter" type of raising environment, and when they are 8 weeks old I would begin treating them as individuals entirely. Which would mean one crate for each puppy, not crating them together. And which also will mean making special efforts each and every day, to do individual work with each puppy independant of his brother. They need to develop confidence to act independant of their littermate, which is a constant uphill battle when the littermates are never removed. Puppy kindergartne is a starting point , and ideally they should not be in the same class; so you will have to find a place that offers multiple puppy k classes at different times. I would do tat at 9 weeks , so you have a bit of time to straighten out where to take tem for that! I would not expect alot of progresss in the housebreaking area at 6 weeks, but by seven to 8 they can start holding it for two to four hours..not overnight for sure. When you put them in their crates at night, I would wake them every four hours if they don't have an accident before then, and take them out individually to go pees and poops. You want to do so on leash, esp. with two, bcause you do NOT want it to become a play session. It is just leash up, go out, business, praise etc, back in for night nights......... taking them out together, off leash, is just asking for a pain in the ass later on as they begin to see outside as fun, play, run time! LOL. I did mine individually, leashed up, and then allow off leash play for a minute if everyone did their stuff.

Not such good advice IMHO, every other consideration aside, it could get VERY expensive very quickly, as torn up dogs cost vet $$ Two brothers can be a problem, but not if you stay in front of it - do as M.C. said, treat them as individuals and make certain each has their own space so they can chew a bone in their crate without any pestering from a brother - training is the single best way to teach them how you want them to behave and to listen to you,. Train Train Train.

Congratulations on your new puppies. Consistency, consistency, consistency... That is what it takes. Most puppies do not learn to hold their bladder until they are 16-18 weeks old.
As far as feeding, I feed Diamond Naturals for my Mastiffs and they love it. I fed puppy formula until 15 weeks then switched to Large Breed Adult (due to the growth of a mastiff). I know some individuals on here don't even feed puppy to their dogs.
Enjoy those sweet babies!

M.C?? Who's that?
We started bell training today! So far they think it's a toy but Buddy seems to be thinking about it. I catch him chewing on the bells or nosing them sometimes! It's a start!

Look at the above post from Owenspride. She is a trainer, and vet tech and knows her dogs...please dont' let your dogs fight it out. Watch them and let them play, but you don't want any aggressive nature coming out. Good luck and have fun with them. Gina

Quote: We got advice from someone who said to ''let them fight it out early because when they're big and playing it's gonna be scarey sometimes' I could be giving this person too much credit, but it's possible he's referring to the fact that litter mates teach each other bite inhibition. I'm sure six week old puppies aren't actually fighting.

Also, here is a table with a list of states and legals ages for selling puppies. http://www.k9station.com/articles/playbiting.htm
