MASTIFF HEALTH SURVEY - PLEASE HELP!

Dr. Neff, PhD, the Director of the Program for Canine Health and Performance and his research team at Van Andel Research Institute are actively pursuing DNA research on numerous health conditions that affect Mastiffs. In order to continue their research on our breed they need to collect additional information.

This important data can be achieved by ALL MASTIFF OWNERS simply filling out a short 2 MINUTE online, CONFIDENTIAL, survey at:

http://projectdog.org/2affdfad5c4791b2cae8b51fa25d1b89

All MASTIFFS ARE WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE! EVERYONE CAN HELP!

This quick, simple, short survey has been developed for us to enter information about our Mastiffs, both healthy controls and affected Mastiffs are being sought. The survey will be active for ONLY 2 more weeks with the aim of collecting information from a broad spectrum of Mastiffs, so please fill the survey out as soon as possible.  Your participation will allow Mastiffs to stay involved in cutting edge research!

Please answer the quick survey questions and encourage your puppy buyers and other Mastiff owners to also fill it out.  At the end of the survey you will have an option to request a free DNA kit (saliva or cheek swab) which can be mailed to your home if you would like to participate further.

**Even if you have already contributed a sample in the past to Dr. Neff's research projects, they request that you please take the simple survey to answer questions and update information about your Mastiffs.**

BACKGROUND AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT DR. NEFF AND HIS RESEARCH:

Dr. Neff and his research team have identified genetic changes involving multiple disorders such as Wobblers syndrome, cancer, deafness, dwarfism and behavior.  Many of these conditions are being investigated in Mastiffs. It is hoped that this state of art research will lead to better diagnostic tools and treatment options as well as to develop preventative options that will help our dogs and humans too!

By filling out Dr. Neff's Mastiff Health Survey, you have an opportunity to truly advance ongoing research efforts in our breed and every Mastiff can be part of the solution to improving canine health. Please consider taking this simple 2 minute- 100% CONFIDENTIAL- survey about our Mastiffs at:

http://projectdog.org/2affdfad5c4791b2cae8b51fa25d1b89

Please distribute this announcement and the above survey link to all Mastiff sites, friends and forums! It will take widespread dissemination to Mastiff owners everywhere to meet Dr. Neff's goal- which is to have 1000 responses!  We already have 464 Mastiffs included in the survey so we are already almost half way to reaching our goal, SO PLEASE take the survey on all your Mastiffs and encourage other Mastiff owners to take it as well!

All survey responders will be the first to receive feedback and research updates!

Please contact me at mastiff@iinet.com with any questions.  With the participation of the Mastiff Community you can look forward to updates from Dr. Neff on this survey and other research results!

Thank you and PLEASE ENROLL YOUR MASTIFF NOW!

Today we have 664 Mastiffs in the online survey!  We are 2/3 of the way to our goal!  We only need 336 more Mastiffs in the survey to have 1000.  Please fill out the survey on all your Mastiffs and ask all your friends to do the survey on their Mastiffs too.  It is super simple and quick!

Good news Anna!  I spoke with Allison and can do all 4 of mine even though Suzie is not registered her parents were not registered.   SO guess what I am doing at lunch?

Also I have hit everyone on my FB lisdt that has a Blu puppy or that I bred to still have some of those to come in yet.  But I am a good old Pushy New Yorker when I have to be.

Quick simple and easy! Just wondering if they are interested in information regarding Mastffs who have "passed" far too soon. Having lost our girl to cancer at 20 months I am so very happy to see a study of all things Mastiff related!!!

In case you are curious what Van Andel Research Institute is about, please read the attached 2011 Van Andel Annual Report.  As you'll see, they are an amazing group with brilliant scientists and researchers that are collaborating with other brilliant scientists around the world.  VARI has a state of the art facility in Grand Rapids, MI and they are using the most current technology available today.  Dr. Mark Neff, PhD is the director of the Program for Canine Health and Performance and he is studying the genetics of purebred dogs (including Mastiffs) to be used as a model for human research.  Our goal is that all research progress gained by studying health and behavior disorders in Mastiffs will lead to better diagnostic tools as well as advanced treatment options and preventative stradegies which will help our breed and humans too.

Van Andel
 2011 Annual Report is attached.
