We have a serious skunk problem here. My guy's generally get "skunked" 3-4 times a year.
http://www.naturemakesitwork.com/home/index.php
Natures Miracle Skunk Odor Remover works!! I put it in a spray bottle and spay them down real good, then rub it in so it get's down to the skin. I've never had it dry them out or bleach there coat. By the time their coat dries there is not much smell left. wait a couple day's and give them a good bath

My little Newmie (Newman) already has calloused areas on elbows; I know this comes with the territory but he is only 3+/- months old. So, I tried what I do to my heels (so dry, I keep my spare change in the cracks.....) I rub the calloused areas with maximum strength acne pads (2% salicylic acid). I buy the cheapest (usually in house brand/knock off). Then, I plaster on any thick ointment that is highly emollient and protects (bag balm, white petroleum, some diaper rash ointments, etc). I have been doing this for one week, and I have some little hairs growing through Now, I know one day what these elbows will look like; they will be past the point of return. For now, while he is such a pup, it makes me feel better

For calloused elbows and dry noses: I use Kerasolv Gel made by DVM. It's a little on the expensive side but a little goes a long way. If you use it faithfully you will be pleased with the results. It is also good to use faithfully before a dog show. The nose is so smooth, dark and no cracks.
For hygromas: Check out http://www.dogleggs.com. My Boulder loves his dogleggs. Not only does he not have hygromas but I feel as if they act as extra elbow support as if wearing a knee brace. And in his older years he's probably enjoying the extra support.

if your dog drools alot besides taking an old cloth to wipe the drool. Wash out an old empty spray bottle and fill it with lemon juice, then spray it on the inside of his mouth mainly were the drool comes out (this will prevent him from drooling.) that's what i do
hope i helped.

I know these are not the most fashionable but they are easy to wipe drool off of and since they are fitted they don't hang down. Used them when our son was a messy toddler and just got some new ones for our "big toddler."

O.K. - I discovered that chicken hearts make really great pill pockets! Mine is raw fed so I'm used to getting my hands in there. Most dogs love these things and it makes it so easy when you have pills to give for 2 weeks!

This is my first post, and my first Mastiff Puppy. My two girls have a personal trampoline, the kind adults are supposed to exercise on, they run about $25.00. When they are not playing on it, it doubles as an elevated dog bed. I just put her blanket on top, and she LOVES it! No with that being said, she is still a puppy, only 6 months old and 102 lbs. So I am not sure how it will do as she gets older, I will let you all know!

The other day someone suggested that I brush my dog out using a pumice scouring stone (like the kind used to scrub floors and stuff). It works AMAZING!!!! First wipe the dog down with a damp rag, and then run the pumice stone down the dogs coat...pulls all the dead hair and skin out. Plus my dog loved the feeling of it! I also used it to get the hair out of my floor mats in my car.
I got my pumice stone for $2.00 at home depot!

A great idea for an elevated food stand: 5 Gallon pal (put a heavy rock or brick inside to weigh it down) and put the top on it. Then put your bowl on top. It doesn't slide, spill over, or move!!!!!!

Okay - I've got a few
1) Dog eats glass or from personal experience - Xmas ornaments..... Soak cotton balls in milk and feed to dog. The cotton absorbs the broken pieces and the dog poops it out Problem solved!
2) Oxyfresh Shampoo, Pet Gel & Deodorizing spray for De-Skunking. Spray deodorizer liberally all over dog, apply pet gel to nose, lips, mouth, face. Let sit 30 min. Wash in shampoo, let sit 30 min. NO MORE SKUNK SMELL. I love this stuff. As a groomer, it is absolutely hands down the only method that has worked in my shop. I can guarantee a dog will leave w/out skunk smell. UNLESS dog was already 'washed'. If dog was already treated or washed, won't be as effective.
3) Nail Trimming - put left knee up under the belly/rear to support legs. Lift up paw one at a time, trim away. This helps if dog feels off balance while trimming. Also helps if your dog has rear injuries or problems.
Hmmmm - its all I've got for now .......

Hi Linda, I have found that peroxide will do the same thing. I just pour it on, let it bubble and just blot the excess. Leave most of it on. Of course, don't use near the eyes :-)

LOL. from personal experience here (I made one for my last litter) I won't last much past 1. But I did have 6 of them then eventually just the 2. They would take a flying leap and jump in the middle. The fabric kept stretching more and more. One day... CRACK!! Broke the whole frame!! but they did seem to love it

This is a great idea if your bitch needs to have her puppies weaned from her but you don't want to separate her from them: I used old t shirts (the longest ones work best) Her head and legs fit perfectly in them and then I gathered the t-shirt up at the back and used an elastic band to wrap around the extra gathering of material. This way I could adjust the tension when I needed to. The t shirt also serves to support the teats as they begin to dry up. I used heavier t shirts in the winter as this served to keep her warm when she went outside (we have -40 up here during our winters! ) The pups learned quickly that scratching at their mom for food produced no results as I would just replace the t shirt if it got torn.

Here is the Satin Ball recipe
This recipe is one for putting weight on an animal quickly, as some use it for putting a couple extra pounds on a show animal prior to the big day, or an animal that may have been ill and needs a weight gain program. It has also been reported that this recipe will help with some forms of hair loss, such as when your dog(s) blow their coat, to keep the coat healthy and shiny. This recipe is intended to be fed raw. 10# hamburger meat 1 jar wheat germ 1 lg box of oatmeal (uncooked) 1 1/4 Cup vegetable oil 10 eggs 10 sm pkgs unflavored gelatin 1 1/4 Cup unflavored molasses A pinch of salt 1 lg box Total cereal (2lb's) (You may also add a pinch of garlic powder to add flavor) Mix all ingredients together well, much like a meatloaf....put into separate freezer bags and freeze, thawing out as needed. It puts weight on in a very short time, not to mention the gloss in their coat. You can use it every day when they have a show to do and it does not produce diarrhea. It can be fed alone or with kibble. I don't like the Satin Ball recipe b/c of the sugar- laden Total Cereal. Here's the fat ball recipe that helped put weight on Druid. - 1 lb ground beef
1 8 oz pkg cream cheese 1 jar all natural peanut butter 1 jar (smaller of the sizes) wheat germ 1 doz egg yolks 1 cup or so of flaked oats soaked in heavy cream
Mix up, form balls, freeze, feed as treats or food supplement.

Hi Everyone,I don't have my puppy yet but am trying to get organised for her arrival. We have stairs leading to upstairs bedrooms. They are wooden and fairly narrow. Should I put a child proof gate at bottom of stairs right from the start. Only problem is I'll want to snuggle up with her. Do you think she would manage the stairs when shes older (or do I need to build a slide on the side I'm loving all your advice cheers Annie

Hi Everyone!
I am fairly new to the mastiff community. I have been blessed with a large boy that is not 17 weeks old. We work diligently with socialization. Unfortunately, a lot of pet stores, places in town, and my house have nice slick floors. I have tried to put some extra rugs down in my house but he still slides around all the time. It is pitiful to try to watch him get up as he slides around! I also can not imagine to think what this is doing for his joints! I MUST FIND A SOLUTION. Any great ideas on that?

Love this thread!!! Ok, here is my "helper" hint. I use a hot water heater drip pan by Rubbermaid (about $10 at home improvement stores) and place the water bowls in the center of it. It catches *most* of the dribbles before they make their way to the living room, kitchen and the whole house!! Just wipe it out every week. Works for food bowls also.

One more....for slick paws. Use a tiny bit of Tacky Finger found at office supply stores on the pads. It's non toxic, and can give a little bit of grip to paws. I used it on my old boy to help him get a grip when getting up...he loved to lie down on the cool floor in front on the air conditioner.

I know this is not too common with Mastiffs but one of mine gets his anal glands filled with fluid periodically. If any of you have experienced this the odor is unbearable. Typically we go to the vet to get his glands expressed and the vet fills the glands with an antibiotic cream. We clean the area before, during, and after but it still well stinks. Last time I went to the vet to have this procedure done she told me to buy roll on deodorant and after cleaning the area use this on his rear and she does not know why but the odor just is not there and it helps with infection. I can tell you it works. Another piece of advice is to label the roll on, so you know it is not for you!

I enjoyed the info here, just decided to add some info about diatomaseous earth, must be food grade, not the kind for swimming pools. I have been using it for several years, I sprinkle it on the food for dogs, goats and my horses, it will naturally worm them, and there are less flies on the poop, since it will kill the larve, my horses coats are beautiful from using it. Also if you have a dog or horse that is having a hard time putting on weight a also will put veg. oil on the food and the weight will go back on, go to http://www.wolfcreekranch.com they will give you all the formulas and uses for DE, you can even mix it in your juice in the morning and will help you in many ways. I use it to control bugs in the house, safe around food prep areas also. If I have a pup that eats poop, I put a tsp of canned pumpkin on its food, that will keep it away from the poop.

Any advice on getting our puppy to ring the bells we attached to the door knobs when he needs to go out.
