Hi

I wondered if I could ask if any members had any photos or anything else on Sam Moseley, Farcroft or Hamil. I'm interested to collect photos, adverts etc of my great grandfather

Thanks

Mel you might try contacting the British bullmastiff league,
http://britishbullmastiffleague.co.uk/
originally ...The British Bullmastiff League was formed in 1925 it was then called "The Midland Bull And Mastiff Club".
Your relative was a member.
Eminent breeders that have been members of the British Bullmastiff league over the 75 years are Mr Mosley (Farcroft) Mr Toney (of CH Roger of the fens fame) Mr & Mrs Short (Bulstaff) Mt F Turnbull (Turnbull) Mr T Avery (Babcock) Mr Cook (Fenchurch) Mr C Leeke (Bulmas) Mr J Higginson (Stanfell) Mr J Price (Lombardy Mr & Mrs Collias (Oldwell) just to name a few.

23 June 1925 - the establishment of the breed club registered by Kennel Club (MBMC) 19 Aug 1925 - the first breed show took place in Bagnoll. The bullmastiff Farcroft Fidelity (born 1921) owned by S.E. Moseley, was the first specimen of the breed, which became the winner. He was the very first bullmastiff registered in the pedigree book of Kennel Club.

September, 1925 - the first standard of the breed appeared.

4 Jan 1926 - the second breed club "National Club of Bullmastiffs" was registered in Kennel Club - the club of police dogs, established by S.E. Moseley (kennel "Farcroft").

1928 - the first prize of Champion wins the brindle bitch Farcroft Silvo (born from Hemilla Gripa and Farcroft Belltong) owned by S.E. Moseley.

Mr Douglas Oliff mentions in ‘The Mastiff & Bull Mastiff Handbook’ p 106 – ‘Mr Sam Moseley was basically a smallholder who kept and bred dogs . As the Our Dogs advert of the 1920s indicates it did not include he was breeding on a ‘small scale’ , ie - ‘Mr Moseley owns over thirty matrons which are boarded out … puppies comprise probably the largest number of the breed owned by one owner . ’

Wow! They are far more Mastiff like than Bullmastiff like.
Stunningly beautiful!!!  I would take a Farcroft Bullmastiff anyday...LOL.
You must be very proud of your great grandfather's dogs!
Good Luck in your quest.

Thanks Marcel ! That is a great piece. Yes I think he did a great thing & I think concentrated on the dog as a practical animal rather than pretty show stuff. There is I think a subtle difference about that from then to now.

I spoke to Douglas a few years ago & still have his letter

You’re welcome , Mel . In those days soundness may have been of prime order in Bull Mastiff breeding like it seemingly also was in Mastiff breeding before the era of dog shows . The omnipresent urge of respective breeders to distinguish themselves from others in such show matters has gradually led to the evil of fads & excess at cost of natural balance & fitness .

The group photograph here  below taken from an Our Dogs Xmas number  of the 1920s may include Mr Moseley born ‘72 , and I guess it may be the man sitting on a chair next to a lady , perhaps his wife . If not , you may correct it !

I do have the Xmas suppl containing a full page devoted to that club ; the text as shown in former post is complete and besides the group photo there are also pics of breed specimens owned by members .To scan & post here (on a Mastiff forum) all the articles/pics/&c which may refer  to the (pre-war) Bull Mastiff  is not obvious due to the way oversized amount of old stuff newspapers , &c , thereto . So  , in attachment a few clippings which might be of interest .

Thank you Marcel, I really appreciate your effort. You have clearly put in a lot of time and dedication into researching the Mastiff breed, just glad you extented that to Bullmastiffs

If you are able to email the rest of that first article with the photos that would be fabulous to r6bikerbabe@hotmail.com, otherwise thank you again for your time and response
