Is a must for mastiff owners! Im telling you the benefits are endless for both people and pups.

http://www.organicfacts.net/organic-oils/organic-coconut-oil/health-benefits-of-coconut-oil.html

Trucker was shaking his head this morn. I checked his ears and both were really red and itchy...no smell though. I cleaned them with coconut oil because the blue power is sitngy if skin is broken..and he scratched his ears.

He was in love with the massage after of course. 5hrs later I just checked his ears...I swear not even a hint of redness, his ears werent inflamed at all..it completed soothed them. Then I read that coconut oil is not only antibacterial but antifungal as well. I think his ears were a bit yeasty...but they are clean as can be not bugging him at all now.

Ive been putting this on his callouses too. He scratched one and it didnt bleed but it was irritated looking. His callouses are super soft now and now that I know it helps protect against infection etc I will be using it daily.

I buy it in a 1.5 kg tub for myself. Its the only thing Im using on my face right now as moisturizer. Im going to start giving the dogs some in their kibble..just a tablespoon a day.

Mindy,

Is the Cononut Oil a liquid, a gel, ointment, etc. ???

And where do you get it ??

If a liquid do you just put a few drops in the ear canal and massage the outer ear ?

If a gel or ointment do you just rub it (or massage) on the inner ear ?

Thanks in advance

I bought it at HomeSense of all places. It HAS to be raw organic..which is easily found. Health Food stores carry it and some grocery stores in their organic/healthy section. When at room temp its the consistancy of butter/lard. But as soon as it touches your skin turns to oil. So for ears I just wipe it in the ear with my finger and it melts and then I massage the ear with the flap over the ear and it gets right in the canal. Keep it stored in a cool place out of the sun. But it has no shelf life..it doesnt go bad.

This is the brand I have, looks like you can buy online too.

Mindy,

I really need to thank you for posting about this.  My Lab always runs & hides when it comes to cleaning his ears so I was able to fool him with the coconut oil, LOL.  Not only do the ears look good, they smell even better!  In fact, I caught one of my cats licking his ear after, LOL.

I've been putting a little bit in his food as well.  What I find most interesting is that my cats are going nuts over it as soon as they see the jar come out.  I've been putting the teeniest little dot in their dish when I give them their canned food.  I sure hope it's okay for them as well.

When I found the oil at the grocery store I noticed that they also sell manuka honey too!  They had a +16 and a +12 (or maybe 10) if I remember correctly.  It's on the list for next time.  Thanks again for the good advice!

Coconut
(Cocos nucifera)

The Tree of Life

The scientific name for coconut is Cocos nucifera. Early Spanish explorers called it coco, which means "monkey face" because the three indentations (eyes) on the hairy nut resembles the head and face of a monkey. Nucifera means "nut-bearing."

The coconut provides a nutritious source of meat, juice, milk, and oil                 that has fed and nourished populations around the world for generations.                 On many islands coconut is a

Harvested coconuts lined up on the beach.

staple in the diet and provides the majority of the food eaten. Nearly                 one third of the world's population depends on coconut to some degree                 for their food and their economy. Among these cultures the coconut has a                 long and respected history.

Coconut is highly nutritious and rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. It is classified as a "functional food" because it provides many health benefits beyond its nutritional content. Coconut oil is of special interest because it possesses healing properties far beyond that of any other dietary oil and is extensively used in traditional medicine among Asian and Pacific populations. Pacific Islanders consider coconut oil to be the cure for all illness. The coconut palm is so highly valued by them as both a source of food and medicine that it is called "The Tree of Life." Only recently has modern medical science unlocked the secrets to coconut's amazing healing powers.

Coconut In Traditional Medicine

People from many diverse cultures, languages, religions, and races scattered around the globe have revered the coconut as a valuable source of both food and medicine. Wherever the coconut palm grows the people have learned of its importance as a effective medicine. For thousands of years coconut products have held a respected and valuable place in local folk medicine.

In traditional medicine around the world coconut is used to treat a wide variety of health problems including the following: abscesses, asthma, baldness, bronchitis, bruises, burns, colds, constipation, cough, dropsy, dysentery, earache, fever, flu, gingivitis, gonorrhea, irregular or painful menstruation, jaundice, kidney stones, lice, malnutrition, nausea, rash, scabies, scurvy, skin infections, sore throat, swelling, syphilis, toothache, tuberculosis, tumors, typhoid, ulcers, upset stomach, weakness, and wounds.

Coconut Oil

While coconut possesses many health benefits due to its fiber and nutritional content, it's the oil that makes it a truly remarkable food and medicine.

Once mistakenly believed to be unhealthy because of its high saturated fat content, it is now known that the fat in coconut oil is a unique and different from most all other fats and possesses many health giving properties. It is now gaining long overdue recognition as a nutritious health food.

Coconut oil has been described as "the healthiest oil on earth." That's quite a remarkable statement. What makes coconut oil so good? What makes it different from all other oils, especially other saturated fats?

The difference is in the fat molecule. All fats and oils are composed of molecules called fatty acids. There are two methods of classifying fatty acids. The first you are probably familiar with, is based on saturation. You have saturated fats, monounsaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats. Another system of classification is based on molecular size or length of the carbon chain within each fatty acid. Fatty acids consist of long chains of carbon atoms with hydrogen atoms attached. In this system you have short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA), and long-chain fatty acids (LCFA). Coconut oil is composed predominately of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA), also known as medium-chain triglycerides (MCT).

The vast majority of fats and oils in our diets, whether they are saturated or unsaturated or come from animals or plants, are composed of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA). Some 98 to 100% of all the fatty acids you consume are LCFA.

The size of the fatty acid is extremely important. Why? Because our bodies respond to and metabolize each fatty acid differently depending on its size. So the physiological effects of MCFA in coconut oil are distinctly different from those of LCFA more commonly found in our foods. The saturated fatty acids in coconut oil are predominately medium-chain fatty acids. Both the saturated and unsaturated fat found in meat, milk, eggs, and plants (including most all vegetable oils) are composed of LCFA.

MCFA are very different from LCFA. They do not have a negative effect on cholesterol and help to protect against heart disease. MCFA help to lower the risk of both atherosclerosis and heart disease. It is primarily due to the MCFA in coconut oil that makes it so special and so beneficial.

There are only a very few good dietary sources of MCFA. By far the best sources are from coconut and palm kernel oils.

Health Benefits of Coconut Oil

The health benefits of coconut oil include hair care, skin care, stress relief, maintaining cholesterol levels, weight loss, increased immunity, proper digestion and metabolism, relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV and cancer, dental care, and bone strength. These benefits of coconut oil can be attributed to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, and its properties such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, soothing, etc.

How is Lauric Acid Used by our body?

The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which is claimed to help in dealing with viruses and bacteria causing diseases such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. It helps in fighting harmful bacteria such as listeria monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa such as giardia lamblia. As a result of these various health benefits of coconut oil, though its exact mechanism of action was unknown, it has been extensively used in Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicinal system. The Coconut Research Center has compiled various references on scientific research done on coconut oil.

Before we move on to the benefits of coconut oil in detail, let us understand its composition.

Composition of Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil consists of more than ninety percent of saturated fats (Don’t panic! First read to the last word. Your opinion may change), with traces of few unsaturated fatty acids, such as monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Virgin Coconut Oil is no different from this. Let us have a bit detailed study of this.

  • The Saturated Fatty Acids: Most of them are Medium Chain Triglycerides, which are supposed to assimilate well. Lauric Acid is the chief contributor, with more than forty percent of the share, followed by Capric Acid, Caprylic Acid, Myristic Acid and Palmitic.
  • The Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids: Linoleic Acid.
  • The Monounsaturated Fatty Acids: Oleic Acid.
  • The Poly-phenols: Gallic Acid, which is phenolic acid. These poly-phenols are supposed to be responsible for the fragrance and the taste of Coconut Oil and Virgin Coconut Oil is rich in these poly-phenols.
  • Certain derivatives of fatty acid like Betaines, Ethanolamide, Ethoxylates, Fatty Esters, Fatty Polysorbates, Monoglycerides and Polyol Esters.
  • Fatty Chlorides, Fatty Alcohol Sulphate and Fatty Alcohol Ether Sulphate, all of which are derivatives of Fatty Alcohols.
  • Vitamin-E and Vitamin K and minerals such as Iron.

Let us now explore the benefits of coconut oil in detail:

Hair Care:

Coconut oil is one of the best natural nutrition for hair. It helps in healthy growth of hair providing them a shiny complexion. Regular massage of the head with coconut oil ensures that your scalp is free of dandruff, lice, and lice eggs, even if your scalp is dry. Coconut oil is extensively used in the Indian sub-continent for hair care. It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. It is therefore used as hair care oil and used in manufacturing various conditioners, and dandruff relief creams. Coconut oil is normally applied topically for hair care.

Skin Care:

Coconut oil is excellent massage oil for the skin as well. It acts as an effective moisturizer on all types of skins including dry skin. The benefit of coconut oil on the skin is comparable to that of mineral oil. Further, unlike mineral oil, there is no chance of having any adverse side effects on the skin with the application of coconut oil. Coconut oil therefore is a safe solution for preventing dryness and flaking of skin. It also delays wrinkles, and sagging of skin which normally become prominent with age. Coconut oil also helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections. Therefore coconut oil forms the basic ingredient of various body care products such as soaps, lotions, creams, etc., used for skin care. Coconut oil also helps in preventing premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its antioxidant properties.

Heart Diseases:

There is a misconception spread among many people that coconut oil is not good for the heart. This is because it contains a large quantity of saturated fats. However, coconut oil is beneficial for the heart. It contains about 50% lauric acid, which helps in preventing various heart problems including high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. The saturated fats present in coconut oil are not harmful as it happens in case of other vegetables oils. It does not lead to increase in LDL levels. It also reduces the incidence of injury in arteries and therefore helps in preventing atherosclerosis.

Weight Loss

Coconut oil is very useful in reducing weight. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight. It is also easy to digest and it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and enzymes systems. Further, it increases the body metabolism by removing stress on pancreases, thereby burning out more energy and helping obese and overweight people reduce their weight. Hence, people living in tropical coastal areas, who eat coconut oil daily as their primary cooking oil, are normally not fat, obese or overweight.

Digestion

Internal use of coconut oil occurs primarily as cooking oil. Coconut oil helps in improving the digestive system and thus prevents various stomach and digestion related problems including irritable bowel syndrome. The saturated fats present in coconut oil have anti microbial properties and help in dealing with various bacteria, fungi, parasites, etc., that cause indigestion. Coconut oil also helps in absorption of other nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Immunity:

Coconut oil is also good for the immune system. It strengthens the immune system as it contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid which have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Healing and Infections

When applied on infections, it forms a chemical layer which protects the infected body part from external dust, air, fungi, bacteria and virus. Coconut oil is most effective on bruises as it speeds up the healing process by repairing damaged tissues.

Infections: Coconut oil is very effective against a variety of infections due to its antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. According to the Coconut Research Center, coconut oil kills viruses that cause influenza, measles, hepatitis, herpes, SARS, etc. It also kills bacteria that cause ulcers, throat infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and gonorrhea, etc. Coconut oil is also effective on fungi and yeast that cause candidiasis, ringworm, athlete's foot, thrush, diaper rash, etc.

Other:

Liver: The presence of medium chain triglycerides and fatty acids helps in preventing liver diseases as they substances are easily converted into energy when they reach the liver, thus reducing work load on the liver and also preventing accumulation of fat.

Kidney: Coconut oil helps in preventing kidney and gall bladder diseases. It also helps in dissolving kidney stones.

Pancreatitis: Coconut oil is also believed to be useful in treating pancreatitis.

Stress Relief: Coconut oil is very soothing and hence it helps in removing stress. Applying coconut oil to the head followed with a gentle massage helps in removing mental fatigue.

Diabetes: Coconut oil helps in controlling blood sugar, and improves the secretion of insulin. It also helps in effective utilization of blood glucose, thereby preventing and treating diabetes.

Bones: As mentioned earlier, coconut oil improves the ability of our body to absorb important minerals. These include calcium and magnesium which are necessary for development of bones. Thus coconut oil is very useful to women who are prone to osteoporosis after middle age.

Dental Care: Calcium is an important element present in teeth. Since coconut oil facilitates absorption of calcium by the body, it helps in getting strong teeth. Coconut oil also stops tooth decay.

HIV and Cancer: It is believed that coconut oil plays an instrumental role in reducing viral susceptibility of HIV and cancer patients. Preliminary research has shown indications of the effect of coconut oil on reducing the viral load of HIV patients (Reference).

Finally, coconut oil is often preferred by athletes and body builders and by those who are dieting. The reason behind this being that coconut oil contains lesser calories than other oils, its fat content is easily converted into energy and it does not lead to accumulation of fat in the heart and arteries. Coconut oil helps in boosting energy and endurance, and enhances the performance of athletes.

Yah! Im addicted to it and tell EVERYONE to try it. The applications are ENDLESS.
It really is amazing stuff.  I use it in my hair as a hot oil treatment...and my hair has never been softer. But a tablespoon or so on the dogs kibble....they really love the taste. When Im done doing the dogs ears they are pushing to lick my hands And I know its really soothing...as the blue power earwash which is good...it stings if the scratched their ears. And Trucker will run if he sees that bottle come out. He doesnt mind the coconut oil at all!

It just has to be RAW virgin...since others are chemically refined and dont have the good stuff in it Oh and never microwave...heat on the stove or with hotwater bath. Heat doesn't ruin it but microwave does...

Becky~ I LOVE manuka...its definitely a good thing to have too!

Coconut Oil

Very few oils have multiple human benefits. Coconut oil is a seed derived oil that can be used from head to toe as well as for cooking.

The scientific name for coconut is cocos nucifera. However, early Spanish explorers nicknamed it coco which means "monkey face" on account of the three indentations (eyes) on the hairy nut resembling the head and face of a monkey. Nucifera means "nut-bearing."

[edit] 'Healthiest oil on earth'

While coconut possesses many health benefits due to its fiber and nutritional content, it is the oil that makes it a truly remarkable food and medicine. Coconut oil has been described as "the healthiest oil on earth."

A colorless to pale brownish yellow oil, coconut oil has a melting point ranging from 23ºC to 26ºC. The glycerides of coconut oil are invariably a mixture of one, two, or three fatty acids. Though coconut oil is known as triglyceride or lipid, it also contains minor proportions of mono and diglycerides and has highest content of glycerol. It is

  • Oil of natural origin
  • Edible in raw form
  • Saturated and stable
  • has high resistance to oxidative rancidity
  • Sharp melting behaviour
  • Skin friendly oil and excellent as baby oil
  • Effective heat transfer agent in frying
  • Ideal confectionery fat
  • Easily saponifiable even in cold
  • Excellent base for hair oil
  • Germicidal and antimicrobial property
  • Lowers evaporative loss of water from skin and protects it from heat
  • Imparts hardness and lathering property to soaps
  • Illuminant and lubricant
  • Does not leave a smoky flame if used in open lamps
  • Only slight changes on hydrogenation
  • Blends well with other oils
  • Easily hydrolyses
  • Excellent fat source in the preparation of filled milk and infant food formulae
  • Desirable emulsifying property
  • No harmful effects due to reheating
  • Can be converted into diesel fuel
  • Essential ingredient in ghee substitutes
  • Carrier and protective agent for fat soluble vitamins
  • Low viscosity

[edit] Used in various forms

In India, coconut oil has been used in various forms ranging from cooking fat, hair oil, body oil to industrial oil. There are different types of coconut oil-

Refined Oil: It comes from copra or dried coconut pulp and has been subjected to chemical processing and intense heat during its production, and consequently its lauric acid content is usually below 50 percent. It is used for industrial purposes in the making of confectionary items, pharmaceutical products and paints.

Virgin Oil: It is gourmet-quality food oil, and is the healthiest oil in the world to use for cooking. It comes from fresh coconut meat and is not subjected to chemical processing and intense heat, and retains a higher content of lauric acid (usually higher than 50 percent).

[edit] Health Benefits of Coconut Oil

Somehow, a four-decade-old-study has left an adverse impact on the image of coconut oil. As a result, there continues to be widespread misconception that coconut oil is bad for you because it is said to raise blood cholesterol and cause heart disease.

On the contrary, the benefits of coconut oil cannot be measured. From increasing resistance in AIDS to fat-loss while eating your favourite foods, coconut oil is far more important than any other oil obtained from the palm nut. Coconut and palm kernel oils were even recognized as health oils in Ayurvedic medicine almost 4000 years ago. A fact that several millennia haven’t been able to erode.

The world today is ailing with problems of health and stress. Finding ways to combat stress and promote healthy living is something that has driven experts alike from medical to the cosmetic circles to conduct researches on the various benefits of coconut oil. And it is said that the presence of Medium Chain Fatty Acid (MCFA) content in coconut oil is what makes it so special and so beneficial.

Ironically, despite its many advantages, coconut oil has consistently been losing its popularity to other alternatives such as vegetable oil etc. Only time can tell how much longer the world will reap the vast benefits coconut oil has to offer.

Its health benefits cover -

  • Coconut oil and AIDS – It helps reduce the viral loads of HIV-aids patients.
  • Coconut oil and diabetes – It helps control diabetes.
  • Coconut oil and the immune system - Coconut oil is said to have properties like a natural antibiotic that renders some viruses, bacteria and fungi inactive.
  • Coconut oil and viruses - It is one of nature's best "germ fighters." It is used to fight viruses like herpes, influenza, and various pathogenic bacteria. This is due to the lauric acid, which is found in abundance in coconut oil.
  • Thyroid-stimulating effects of coconut oil - Many researchers have reported that coconut oil lowers cholesterol (Blackburn et al 1988, Ahrens and colleagues, 1957). The cholesterol-lowering properties of coconut oil are a direct result of its ability to stimulate thyroid function.
  • Anti-cancer effects of coconut oil
  • It protects against heart disease
  • It is easy on the digestion system
  • Does not cause the stickiness of platelets that causes the formation of blood clots
  • Coconut helps to prevent osteoporosis

[edit] Coconut Oil and Weight Loss

Virgin coconut oil helps getting a quicker control of your weight. This is because coconut oil is more easily converted to energy than to body fat. This means that your body will burn your food for increased energy rather than storing it as fat. It also contributes to a sense of satisfaction earlier in the mealtime that makes you tend to want to eat less.

Also as seen earlier its thyroid connection, it helps manage body weight by not inhibiting the body’s thyroid metabolism. Other vegetable oils, being mostly unsaturated, do inhibit the thyroid metabolism.

Considered as holistic oil, research on coconut oil is being conducted world over, despite the fact that it is produced and manufactured mostly in India and other Asian countries. More and more nations are adopting this oil as part of their lifestyle because of the large number of benefits.

[edit] Useful tips

  • Organic coconut oil is extremely beneficial for health, but needs to be used in safe and prescribed measurement.
  • Nutritionists and dieticians suggest that food fried in coconut oil is healthier than that fried in the usual cooking oil.

[edit] CopperBytes

  • Coconut oil prevents tooth decay.
  • Its antioxidant properties are effective against preventing premature ageing and degenerative diseases.
  • Coconut oil can slim overweight dogs, condition their dry shabby-looking coats, offers some relief to painful arthritis or ligament problems, and balance their thyroid. It also gives dogs a natural source of energy and helps keep dogs smelling better.
  • The traditional way of producing coconut oil (virgin) has been used by the Filipinos for thousand of years. Virgin coconut oil, however, can only be produced using fresh coconut meat.
  • Coconut oil is better at revving up your metabolism rate than protein due to its being composed of Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA). Coconut oil is the most concentrated natural source of MCFA.
  • Farmers in the 1940s used coconut oil to attempt to fatten their herds. Instead, the animals became lean, active, and hungry!
  • Coconut oil, made of medium chain triglycerides (MCT), does not require extra enzymes for digestion and absorption and, as such, can be immediately converted by the body into energy.

The ratings are according to its antibacterial property. Normally the higher the morn expensive ( min rating is +10) So I would get the +16.
AT my local health food store the +10 is 24.99 for 300ml. And the +16 is 34.99 for 300ml.  ( I dont think it gets higher than +16) But my hubby gets me the +10 for only 7.00 in Ireland.

Deb, Mindy is an undiscovered wealth of information.    I'm always learning something from her.  This thread is where I learned about the manuka honey.  It can explain more than I can but basically it has great antibiotic properties. It only comes from New Zealand as well.  Any place else and it's fake.

Hope this helps!

I got the honey info based on a study done a few years ago at the University of Ottawa. They tested it against a basic sinus infection bacteria..and it was like 33x more effective at killing the bacteria over the most prescribe antibiotic. Pretty amazing findings. Im always interested when you hear new info and it gives basis to wives tales like drinking honey and tea for sore throat etc. And reason to why my mom's friends ( Guyanese) have incredible skin and hair and very healthy ( eat a lot of coconut oil) It just makes sense!

But the info on coconut oil...that came from my mom. She started on it a few months ago after seeing it on Dr Oz. I am always skeptical of her lastest things so I researched it...its completely amazing. One site I read referred to it as a medicine cabinet in a bottle. Because it just works for EVERYTHING.

But Im glad I could share the info thats been shared with me Thats why this site is good. I learn sooo much and if I can share what little I know...its payback right?

Just be careful using it as a food supplement... It's high in omega 6, but severely lacking in 3 (as in it basically has NONE of it).  6 by itself can be very inflammatory for dogs who may have skin or joint conditions, so if you can, try to balance it out with something high in 3!

We've been using the Nutiva coconut oil for about 6 months for everything. I cook with it, I also use it as a moisturizer, put a little bit in the dogs food every other day, use it for dry spots on the dogs, noses, calluses etc. It is the BEST stuff ever and it smells so yummy. Although, Im not too keen on being 'cleaned' when im wearing a short sleeved shirt or shorts...the dogs can't help themselves from licking it off of me. I will most definitely try to use it in Cain's ear as he gets yeasty sometimes too.

Good point. Though I read it was different than normal saturated fats because in coconut oils its mainly lauric acid. I do use Icelandic Salmon Oil on the dogs morning meat AND on their evening kibble.

btw have a really good cheap source for that too...the orders are only placed every other month so I buy a few bottles. Its 22.00 for a 30z bottle. Which is an awesome price if you've ever bought it in a store. PM me for details...its on another mastiff forum.

Mindy,

Is this the product that you use?  http://www.icelandpure.com/

Just curious because I see they have a special product for large breed dogs.  It has sardines & anchovies in it and appears more concentrated than the regular formula.  It's also not unscented.  Fish breath, lovely.

And for the record, if your hubby can get manuka honey for !$7.00!, I think he (or you) should start a side business and profit from us all, LOL!!!!

Yes thats it. If you notice on the website they sell it for 33. for the 30oz. But because the place I get it from...he buys it in bulk, they give him a deal. So thats why I get it for cheaper. But its the salmon oil he buys in bulk...not the anchovy/sardine. But the salmon oil is also scentless.

Okay, I'm confused...

I thought coconut oil was considered one of the worst oils in terms of clogging arteries and heart disease. Didn't they switch all the movie popcorn a few years ago off of coconut oil to make it healthier?

Is there a processing difference that makes this product healthier, or are we just focusing on the good instead of the bad now?

Oh, and Manuka honey is awesome!! My uncle has a farm in New Zealand with his own bees and he always gives me a jar of his own 10+ or 12+ every time I see him. Nothing better!

Don't Let Coconut Oil Scare You...

Fats, fats, fats. We are told so much about fats. Fats kill. Fats cause heart disease. Fats cause cancer.

In 1998, the American Heart Association finally came out telling us to limit our intake of trans fats, the main ingredient in margarine.

Trans fats are also called partially hydrogenated oils. They are in all our junk foods, but some food companies are starting to cut back on their use, as sales have fallen off since revelations about trans fats began circulating.

Heating oils (almost all oils) actually starts to turn the oil into a partially hydrogenated oil.

The oils in your store, on those shelves, looking golden and clear, are ALREADY RANCID.

Coconut Oil is the healthiest fat.

Coconut oil is one of the most stable oils you can buy. It does not turn rancid easily. It does not attack your arteries.
Coconut oil was one of the foods Weston Price studied in his journeys. He discovered that the coconut was considered, by the local populations, a medicine food. He found that those who consumed coconut regularly had no cancer, heart disease, arthritis, or diabetes.

Coconut oil is antiviral, anti fungal (kills yeast too) and antibacterial.

Coconut oil is called the "low fat" fat. It acts like a carbohydrate, it is quickly broken down in the liver and used as quick energy. It is NOT stored like other fats.

It boosts one’s energy and endurance. Many athletes use it blended into their drinks. It also supports thyroid function and increases your metabolism (great if you want to lose weight).

Coconut oil improves digestion and absorption of fat soluble vitamins, minerals (especially calcium and magnesium), and amino acids.

It improves the body’s use of blood glucose and improves insulin secretion and absorption.

Cooking with coconut oil does not create any harmful byproducts.

Coconut oil helps the body heal and repair faster. It aids and supports immune function, protecting us from a variety of cancers.

Coconut oil, contrary to much hubbub, is good for your heart. It keeps our blood platelets from sticking together (and causing dangerous clots).

Coconut oil can lower your blood pressure.

Coconut oil is a natural antioxidant.

What coconut oil it does to your skin, you simply have to witness. It forms a barrier against infections, softens and moisturizes your skin, and prevents wrinkling, sagging, and age spots.

Coconut oil is often preferred by athletes and body builders and by those who are dieting. Using coconut oil increases your metabolism. This is the low fat fat that helps you lose weight. The fats in coconut oil, unlike all other fats, do not circulate through the blood looking for places to be stored. They go directly to the liver and are turned into instant energy.

Distinguish the differences between HYDROGENATED Coconut oil (the one with the bad press) and VIRGIN Coconut oil.
expeller press, coconut oil
Expeller Press for coconut oil

I use the Coconut oil from Tropical Traditions. When I want the sweet coconut taste I use the virgin oil, for cooking or when the coconut taste wouldn't work so well I use the expeller pressed.

Don't let the media reports about coconut oil scare you - buy from a quailty source - work up to about 4 tablespoons a day, this sounds like a lot but I found it was very easy to get this much oil between cooking and adding it to my tea.

When I want to know what is really good or bad for you --Body builders will tell you   I work out at a gym a couple of hours 4-5 times a week now and can not believe no one mentioned this.  I know all the data has changed on oil and protein intake, and oil and protein and a few carbs are best and especially for me.  So I eat real stuff like butter or olive oil, so coconut oil will be better for me no doubt and at the worst my skin will be soft and smell great

I'm laughing at myself because I totally read that wrong.  Small minds (mine) and all. . . .

My mother in law has MS and takes a boatload of medications so it's really important that her doctor know everything she take right?  Well, after her last hospital stay, my sister in law & I went through all her medications to make sure she was taking them correctly.  She says "What about the ones Dr. Oz told me to take?"  Us:  Huh?  She brings out a cabinet's worth of vitamins & supplements that she had been taking that no one knew about.  Except her & Dr. Oz of course because he said they were good for her.

We had to leave the room to keep from laughing or strangling her.  I can't really say which now.  I've never seen the show myself so I can't say anything about him but I do hear he is quite popular.

Just thought I would share.

Thanks for explaining! I was thinking exactly that... if the difference was whether it was hydrogenated. That makes sense to me, because that's how it is with lard. Shelf-stable lard that you see in the stores is terrible for you because it's hydrogenated. But we raise our own pigs and render and can our own lard, and the stuff we make is no worse for you than butter and has no trans fats.

Mindy, thank you so much for this thread! Newton has had an ear infection for a month, nothing worked- prescriptions from the vet, home rememdies, nothing! I ordered coconut oil and the next day gone! My Mom put it on her little pups hot spots and gone. My neighbor used it on her goats ears....ear infection gone. My vet is in love with this stuff.

So glad you posted about this, thank you from all my friends and neighbors and my vet too!

I'm so glad it's worked good for you! I'm a firm believer. It has worked so well for my pups ears and any skin irritation both people and pup. It's nice to find something that works that isn't chemical

Just make sure to buy organic, raw coconut oil. It will look like lard but instantly melts on skin. My fave brand is Nutiva and it can be bought inarge 54oz tubs. Also when using always heat it like you would a baby bottle. Never in the microwave it kills the antibacterial/anti fungal etc properties. You can head in a saucepan it has a very high burn point so it's also great to cook with!

I bought Nutiva also, two pack tubs on Amazon for like $28 (Prime is free shipping also!) and got it in two days. I will admit I did not warm it, just took some out and rubbed it in Newtons ears, but this is Florida, so as soon as I touched it the melting began :-)
