.Won the bid today. These were offered to me by a dealer last week for $3500.00.

I was tempted, but did my usual DD and I discovered them at auction. Apparently, the dealer did not own the pieces and if I told him yes, he would have bid for them himself and then flipped them by selling it to me. This is not uncommon practice and if he was outbid, he would just tell me that they are no longer available, with some BS excuse!

In any case, here are the pair..............

Steve, I have thoroughly enjoyed this thread. Post #75 had me laughing as my Noah makes his rounds through the house at least twice during the night and last week would not let the cable man leave the house with his own tool bag. If what you've posted is just a sample from your museum I can't imagine how long it would take and the joy it would bring to go through it all.  Thanks so much for posting this and if you've got a comfy chair and a pot of hot coffee, I'm on my way!

Not in my possession yet, just acquired the other day, so we'll have to wait and see if there are any coffee-grinds in the inkwells!

Or, to quote WC Fields...."who put the pinapple juice, in my pinapple juice?"

Not a Pug, but not the form we recognize as correct for the modern Mastiff. It's what we see in many objects of art, that date back beyond a certain point in time, coupled to the ability of the artisan.

Nice contribution to the thread Erika!

Yes, they are mine and can be seen at the Museum if interested.

Early 20th century casting on marble base unsigned.

They were used as the form for the casting done in your cultured version. Fiberglass resin and crushed limestone is often used as the medium for such cultured castings. It presents well and gives the weight & luster of marble. I'm sure you are enjoying the pair!

No comment , Steve ? So not directly your usual style , I may think . Is it perhaps made from fiberglass resin & cushed limestone often used as the medium for such cultured castings giving the weight & luster of (painted) marble . Or is the pic not clear enough to express your opinion as a fine art dealer ? I may say , at any rate , do try to not lose this one , even if it may be not genuine .

I bought this companion pair of cultured marble statues from england on ebay.
They are very similar to the statue on post #864.
I like the heads on this pair better though. They are about 12" long and very heavy.

Thanks Grant for retrieving them. I forgot that they were from the other thread. Must be a senior moment!

Marcel, don't take offense, as I thought you posted and commented, in a rhetorical way, regarding the lost lot in Erika's reference vis a vis the painting. It's why I didn't respond. These threads can be foggy at times.

Interesting piece you posted. Do you know the provenance and what can you tell us about it?

Just to be clear, it's not a crime to purchase, or own a reproduction, or secondary casting, as they can bring as much visual pleasure as original works.

Many of F. Remington's bronze castings have been reproduced and can even fool experts at first glance.

There are many con men out there looking for a fast buck to be made. Even reputable dealers have been known to stretch a truth beyond recognition.

Any descriptive info I provide, it to enlighten those who do collect, so they can make informed purchases.

There's one dealer out there who specializes in animal art, especially canines, who will look for auctions and then offer the same piece to his customers for vastly higher prices than being asked for at the auction. If he finds a live one, he then bids for the piece, knowing in advance how high he can go. If he's successful, he makes a tidy sum in this flip. If the bidding goes too high, he just notifies his client that something was not right with the piece, or makes some other lame excuse for the deal not going through.

As they say, caveat emptor!

I just had an interesting guest at the Mastiff Museum...........

It was H accompanied by his Mastiff Bess.

She is coming along nicely and a big girl for her age. I've encouraged H to show her.

I have a standing invitation open to all who wish to view the contents of the Museum.

Don't be shy!

We do not breed often, but we do our best to breed top quality mastiffs
with excellent pedigrees to back them up. All breedings are carefully planned to produce
the very best mastiffs, sound in both body and mind, beautiful and strong,
representing the true mastiff standard.

We fully test our dogs. We believe that a person that "just wants a pet" has a right
to own a beautiful, well bred dog that is sound and healthy
every bit as much as someone wanting a "show dog".

There are many out there. Some made of cast aluminum and others in cast iron. Manufactured by many different companies as well. Not all forms are alike, some castings created at the turn of the last century, others more recent.
Not a rare item, since the cast iron can last forever.
Depending on the age, manufacturer, weathering and casting form, prices can range from $10.00 to well over several hundred.
