hi,

i'm glad you paid more for the die cut LOL!

i had that inkwell too and sold it in the first unloading of antiques.  and the round thing with the 3 dog heads too only i think mine was just round, not with the loop on top, but maybe you bought that from me and i'm mistaken.  i had something with those heads on it.

the nutcrackers are pretty common as far as mastiff items go and steve's right, various metals and more than one mold.  i had too many of those too and they are sold.  i had one with a tray so the nuts fell into the tray that i found at portobello on my mastiff antique binge in the uk years ago.

hopefully steve will continue to overpay for my stuff<G>, because almost all of it is going.    i also have some april cornell linens on ebay in case anyone likes those...too many linens....eek!  time to clean out! and i'm guessing you won't have to outbid steve for those...  ;-)

best,
v

Condition also affects price, at least it's supposed too!

In more expensive items, condition can be a major factor in valuing an objects worth.

It can account for major price swings between similar objects in different conditions.

The die cut did have severed pieces to two legs, with one leg held together by tape.

For a collector looking for the image, it's not going to prevent a sale, especially if the piece is uncommon.

I just purchased it today and it should arrive from England in several days.

I overpaid (a record) for the piece, but it is very rare and I've been looking for one a number of years.

Everything on this thread & more is at the Museum. So once again, a standing invite for all whenever they are ready to view the collection.

I will.

The reason why the image is so compelling, aside from the little girl secure in the protection of the surrogate father figure, is the depiction of the Mastiff as it should be represented as an ideal.

Dicksee hit the mark in this regard and has made an indelible, universal, positive, imprint on all who view this work.

Wow, I have to say that I really, really like that one. Some of the pictures don't even look like Mastiffs to me, but this one captures SO much about the Mastiff. Thanks for sharing. Hey, is that "open invitation" even open to your most voracious debate opponent?

We do not breed often, but we do our best to breed top quality mastiffs
with excellent pedigrees to back them up. All breedings are carefully planned to produce
the very best mastiffs, sound in both body and mind, beautiful and strong,
representing the true mastiff standard.

We fully test our dogs. We believe that a person that "just wants a pet" has a right
to own a beautiful, well bred dog that is sound and healthy
every bit as much as someone wanting a "show dog".

http://www.mike-herwin.com/HerbertDicksee.html

Mike Herwin is recognized as one of the better authorities on Dicksee. From the above sites we also hear from Nick Waters (Zanfi) re: Dicksee.

Some might conclude that these expert opinions of Dicksee's works are merely romanticized balderdash .   No doubt there is poetic license and latitude in many artistic circles, which may give rise to knee-jerk evaluations. Choreographic, or staged compositions, are often imbued with romantic elements that enhance the senses. Such distortions can be accepted, provided they remain true to the general realism of the subject matter under observation. Once we infuse unrelated elements into the subject matter, or distort to higher degrees, just to validate a subjective personal conceptualization, we do no justice to the image, or story being presented. Romantic does not mean nonsense, it only becomes nonsense, when the house of cards being built reaches skyscraper proportions!

In Linda's post #174, we see a similar image to My Lady Sleeps. Therefore, such possibilities of subject matter are not beyond the scope of fanciers to conceptualize, and thereby, reduces the degree of romantic distortion.

Thanks Janine,

Believe it or not, but it was lost in transit!

The Fedex label came off my box and attached itself to another box that was then signed for by someone on Rt. 36.

I had to do the detective work and finally, the box came to me three days after it was supposed to arrive.

Nothing seems to go smoothly anymore despite computers!

I remember when we used marking pens to write an address on a package, which would never come off and then attach itself to another box.

The card above, representing a very rare document in the form of a post card, illustrating the American Mastiff Club (i.e. the Mastiff in America) with tangible evidence as to the interactions with British Mastiff fanciers (Taunton).

The postmarks and receipt, would indicate a receiving date past the meeting schedule, given the time it would have taken for such a postcard to sail across the Atlantic.

Measuring the circumference of where both dogs fit each collar notch, I've measured 23" for Viscount & 19 1/2 -20" for Duchess.

This is assuming the collars were securely fit without too much laxity.
