darn it!
I'm not sure if this is a problem or not......
The stud dogs count for chilled sperm is 40-50%. Is this really bad or can he still make enough puppies? What should the number be?
Thanks for any information you can give me!

It all depends on what the motility is. If the motility is good that should be adequate.. best to do a surgical implant if you have any doubts.

We do not breed often, but we do our best to breed top quality mastiffs
with excellent pedigrees to back them up. All breedings are carefully planned to produce
the very best mastiffs, sound in both body and mind, beautiful and strong,
representing the true mastiff standard.
We fully test our dogs. We believe that a person that "just wants a pet" has a right
to own a beautiful, well bred dog that is sound and healthy
every bit as much as someone wanting a "show dog".

The number of puppies will depend a lot on how many eggs the bitch releases. He can't fertilize what's not there.
50% is still a lot of swimmers, as long as they CAN swim. I would do an SI to get the sperm exactly where they're needed with the least amount of loss in numbers.

hello, this is the idea: my vet wanted to do a TCI. She said that a TCI is as good as a SI. She said "chilled" is the best to use. I called the stud dog owner and he said that the last time they used Mr. Muffin's sperm it was 40-50%. He mentioned something about an SI. I don't want to do a SI if I can avoid it. p.s. The sperm is sent from about 2,000 miles away. By FedEx? Overnighted. I'm becoming "nervous" because things don't seem to be going as I thought they would....yeah, I know..welcome to our world Should I look elsewhere for a Stud Muffin? Thank you!

50 % means nothing unless you have an actual count to go with it. If the dog only produces 100 million sperm and only 40 to 50% are workable I would take a pass. If the dog has good quantity then 50 % would be adequate.

Chilled semen should be in the 70% or over range, and have good forward motility. Anything less you should be doing a SI if you want puppies.

For frozen 100 million POST THAW is barely enough and that is provided you have very precise timing on your bitch.
For TCI or AI fresh chilled you want a lot more quantity maybe 500 Million to 1 Billion if the motility is only 50 %. If the dogs sperm is lower quality I would want to know why. How old is he? Are there white cells in the semen collection ? What measure of volume is the sperm rich fraction? Are there bent and colied tails ?
Personally I would be doing the surgical. My repro vet is against doing TCI with frozen.
Another thing to keep in mind is we are in the middle of summer. Fed`X or any other overnight carrier do not offer special climate control handling of semen shippers. The packages are only shipped with a small ice pack. If this thaws out while sitting in the belly of a hot plane or driving around in a delivery truck you are kinda screwed. Been there-Done that more than once. It's not fun.
At this time of year I would be opting for better preserved frozen with the liquid nitrogen to protect it. OR I would at least have the fresh pack shipped counter to counter via Continental Airlines Quik Pack program.

Thank you for helping me with this. I am more and more getting a clue what you experienced breeders go through to get a litter. You are worth every penny you charge. We're off to the Vet. Thank you Again.
