YES, I am an owner of two American Mastiffs..... and the owner/operator of the only American Mastiff Family website and forum on the Net.
*BUT*... I am also the PROUD "Mom" of an absolutely precious English Mastiff (sadly, my sweet, sweet, EM boy, Frankie, has passed).
Wanted to share an email I sent to my Maggie's foster mom (Alison) at Great Lakes Mastiff Rescue. Alison was both my Maggie's foster mom and my Frankie's foster mom. I can NEVER, EVER thank her enough for all that she did for my babies!! If it weren't for HER, who knows where my sweet Maggie, would be (as she was previously turned down for rescue).
Alison...
Hope you and your family and your furry and feathered family are doing wonderfully!! So sorry that I haven't kept updating often. Maggie will be SEVEN on October 17th! Can you believe it!?!?! She's been doing GREAT for Maggie! She has always been pathologically shy.. and has always felt very uncomfortable outside her "regular" areas. She HAS come a very looooong way though. She is super comfortable and confident walking anywhere within our neighborhood and even going to the vet! I think she likes redheads.. because the ONLY vet that can touch her without her getting upset is a redhead...which, unfortunately, is NOT one of our "regular" vets. LOL Her allergies were horrible for such a long time... and she ended up on either Benadryl AND/OR pred.. UNTIL I switched their food to Nature's Domain (grain free) from Costco! She hasn't been on ANY allergy meds for the past two to three years!!!
As you know, I adopted Brody, an epileptic and deaf AM. She HATES him. ;( After she attacked and killed Annie.... it just thought it was a "female" thing. It WASN'T!! My daughter moved back home with her FEMALE rescue Chihuahua mix. Maggie has NO problem with her. She ONLY has problems with dogs who have MEDICAL issues. She has attacked Brody. So... if I can't supervise them both 100%, they are separated with gates. I know this does NOT make her a "bad" dog. It's survival of the fittest! Don't know the initial cause (*thinking* it was from running up and down the fence line with the dogs next door... and tweaking her back)... but, a few months ago... Maggie lost the use of her back legs.. and bowel and bladder control. Prednisone and several weeks of rest got her back to baseline. Was VERY scared to let her run again. When she recovered, the vet said that we "have" to let her be a dog. Well... it happened again. $2700 lumbar MRI revealed lumbar spinal stenosis with multiple bulging disks. *Otherwise,* she's been a dream!! She and AM Murphy (who will be EIGHT in Jan) are the bestest of friends! Again... sorry that I haven't kept the updates coming. Just wanted to let you know how your foster daughter is doing. Again... you are forever her loving foster mommy... and are absolutely entilted to visitation. Let me know if you want to get together sometime so you can visit her again. I will say that I just love her to pieces... and thank YOU for rescuing her. I can't even imagine where she's be today if YOU didn't save her!!!

happy birthday to Maggie! Sounds like she really lucked out, getting an owner who will put up with and work on her issues, and provide such extensive medical care! Some folks wouldn't, or would not have the funds to do so if they wished. Good for you and for her, happy birthday girlie!

I'm not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, I was laid off in May and only work a couple part-time jobs and do some fill-in work.
I chose to treat my pets like I would treat my "skin" kids... which includes health care.
Thank you all for the birthday wishes for my girl!
