Can a stud dog owner send chilled semen anywhere in the United States? Or do you have to use a local dog for chilled semen?

If he's local--you can do a fresh collection and do an AI--or a natural breeding. Don't need to ship it.
If your male was going to be out of town when you were going to need the semen--you could collect him and place it on ice--and do the breeding with the chilled extended semen--not as good as fresh but would still work.
The great benefit of using frozen semen is that you can breed to a dog that is dead and gone--and still have his puppies. Fresh chilled semen gives you the option of breeding to any male dog in the WORLD. Both of these are great advances for breeders.
No longer does a breeder have to "settle" for dogs within driving distance--you can breed to a dog across the country, from Canada, Europe, or any other place.
Makes finding the "perfect man" for your girl a much easier job. Now, if we could just do this with men......LOL! Catie __________________ Cathy (Catie) Arney

The vet that does the collection can add an "extender" which extends the life of the sperm and it can be shipped anywhere in the U.S. (depending on state laws for "importing/exporting" sperm) by FedEx. __________________ Terri Perkins

I just got back from the Vet. and this is what she told me. She said to do a TCI rather than an AI or SI. She said with a TCI that I could use frozen, chilled or fresh. She said their success rate of TCI and SI is the same. I hope she's right. She said to get "chilled semen" ...and that the stud dog owner has to be willing to stand by and ship literally the day before she needs it...and again a separate time a day or two after that. Does this all sound correct? Lastly, before choosing a stud dog which tests are you adamant that the stud dog owner does? I notice that some dogs on OFA don't have ALL the tests...some have just hips and elbows. Which tests do you insist upon? Also, do you have the stud dog owner do a Brucellosis (sp?). I did one for my girl....but shouldn't the male get that test too? Thanks __________________ Dixie |

Dixie the testing is your call. It depends on what you want to require. Hips and elbows are good but its each breeders call. Even if the stud wasnt tested and I really liked him I would check out his relitives and see how they tested. I would also stilll give the same gaurantee to the puppy buyers but it is your call.
Yes what the vet told you is correct!
Again on the B test its your call if you require it or not. __________________ Lorie

Dixie,
I can't speak for the success rates of your vets, but success depends a LOT on timing no matter how you insert the sperm. My vet did both progesterone testing and vaginal cytologies and used the results of both to determine implant day.
He did SI one time and nothing else, using chilled extended. He placed half of the ejaculate in each horn. We got pregnant with 10 on the first try.
Yes, to use chilled extended, the stud dog owner has to be on "stand by". But not necessarily two times.
TCI requires a special license to do and some vets don't get the license because a general surgeon can do an SI. And you can use fresh, chilled, or frozen with SI too.
Regardless of how you do it - Good Luck!!!!!!
