Lillie is being spayed next week Monday. I decided not to go with the spay/neuter clinics in the area. She is going to one of the vets I use. I didn't want her to be at a clinic with 20 or more cats/dogs having procedures done in one day. With that being said, is there anything I need to know...or look out for. I have had other dogs/cats spayed and neutered but not a giant breed like Lillie. How is their pain control? I plan on getting her a pain shot, do I need to get additional pain meds? The vet uses staples and not glue because of her size. I really wanted the incision glued but he doesn't do that.
Thanks.

There is a particular anesthesia that is recommended for Mastiffs. Be sure to inquire before you bring her in. I believe it's propofol. I also think there is a shortage of it so be sure to ask/insist.

Callisto was just spayed a week ago.  They used propofol as a preop med and isoflorane gas during surgery.  Just be sure they DON'T use acepromazine as the preop med!!!!!!!!

Callisto had a pain shot during surgery and that's it.  She didn't need anything else beyond that.  Her surgery started at 10:30 and I took her home at 2.  But my vets also know me very well and are confident that I know what to look for and what not to do, etc.  Most vets will not release a spay patient until the next day.

My vet did mostly internal stitches and used glue on the external skin layer.

Staples don't usually cause a problem - you just have to go back in 10-14 days to have them removed (unless you have a staple remover and know how to do it yourself ).  I prefer staples over sutures because my girl always seems to have an adverse reaction to the skin sutures they use and the staples don't seem to cause as much itching as sutures.

Additional pain meds are going to depend on your dog.  If they need additional, my vet uses Remidyl because it also has anti-inflamatory properties as well.  When they do a spay, there's a lot of stretching and tearing of tissue and ligaments inside, so there's some associated swelling and the Remidyl reduces that swelling as well as controls pain.

Hope this has been helpful.

Thank you for the information, you have been a big help.  Like I said I've had others that have had surgery I don't know why I'm so worried about Lillie.  She will be 2 next month, I forgot to add that.

The only difference between my two girls and teris is that I used tramadol for pain instead of rymadyl.  Just keep an eye on the incision and keep it clean. If yu have stiches as aopposed to staples dont use hydrogen peroxide to clean with. I prefer staples because they hold better, and usually the dogs are better at leaving the staples alone, and less likely to fall out.
