I'm taking Thor back to the vets tomorrow morning.  He had improved a lot and then yesterday I noticed him starting to itch again and today, the under side of his tail, near the base, is all red and raw.  So, off we go again.  I will have him test him for other things other than allergies this time, though.  Poor boy.

They checked him for fleas the last time and found none, nor have I.  It's got to be some sort of bacterial thing going on I think.  Hopefully they can figure it out so we can give him something to make him more comfy.

I'll let you all know how it goes when we get back.  My computer crashed last week so I'm over at the in-laws using theirs.  No complaining here though, we were lucky during Sandy, northern VT didn't get anything except some wind and rain.  Lower VT and NH got it much worse than we did.  We didn't even lose power.  I'm relieved too simply because a lot of Vermonters still haven't recovered from Irene last year.  Houses were in the river, a post office was in the middle of the street.  It can be devastating.  I feel so badly for those folks that lose everything and especially those that lost loved ones.

Alrighty, just back from the vets with Thor; apparently his allergy turned into an infection.  They gave him a shot of vetalog, and I am giving him prednisone tabs and cephalexin as well as a topical spray gentaspray.  He howled like we were killing him when the vet clipped around his tail.  He made a wicked ruckus.  Geez.  He is the biggest baby ever.  But, hopefully, this will do the trick and we won't have to take him back.

Have you ever used MTG when he start itching?  In the past I have been able to get ahead of problems by using the product.  I swear by it.

Congrats on the spring foal!

Just my two cents, I do not know the length of time the antibiotics were prescribed, but it is typically a 2 week period. With mastiffs and skin issues like this, it will often take much longer than that. If it is not completely gone, and I mean completely, I would recommend extending the cephalexin for a total of 4 weeks or maybe more. Otherwise, it will most likely seem to be relieved for a short period, but flair up again a short time later. Btw, make sure to get some probiotics from a supplement store to keep them on during and for a week or so after the antibiotics. Without it, antibiotics for extended periods can really diminish the amount of good flora in the gut. I hope that helps.

Thanks.  Thor is on the antibiotic for 10 days.  Apparently my vet thought that should do it.  I will definitely keep a close eye on the problem.

Have they ever cultured the area to be sure they are using the right antibiotics?

NO they didn't.  This is the first time he's ever had an issue with allergies or what the vet is now calling a hot spot.  If it doesn't improve with the antibiotics, I'll have him run some tests.

I would have it cultured since it's the first time.  Probably wait since you've already got antibiotics and see if they work.  Right now I've got one that will get a hot spot over the wind changing directions and then one that just barely gets them at all and then 2 that don't at all unless you feed them food with corn which I don't.  But when they get their first one and they've had no changes it could be something that needs an extra kick.  Might have his thyroid checked if it doesn't clear up soon or there's more issues.  I generally soak the spot real good with betadine let it soak in good then rinse with peroxide and don't wipe any of it off just let him be all messy for awhile and it won't soak into their fur so have a towel close by or go outside - do that a couple of times a day and he'll be all patched up soon as the fur grows back.  Alot of people swear by the bleach/dreft/blueing wash - but had no luck at all with it here althought it does make the carpets smell good.  Hope he's better soon - hot spots look like they hurt to me.

Sometimes "simple" works better than anything - at least it does for me..

1 - clean area well - used bedadine solution, bleach water, or just plain dish soap and ater. Dry well

2 - apply triple antibiotic cream - Walmart has it really cheap.

 3 - Watch it disappear!

We do not breed often, but we do our best to breed top quality mastiffs
with excellent pedigrees to back them up. All breedings are carefully planned to produce
the very best mastiffs, sound in both body and mind, beautiful and strong,
representing the true mastiff standard.

We fully test our dogs. We believe that a person that "just wants a pet" has a right
to own a beautiful, well bred dog that is sound and healthy
every bit as much as someone wanting a "show dog".

Hi, yes, he seems to be feeling better although he's lost a bit of his appetite.  Plus, he seems to be extremely thirsty; will the antibiotics do this?  He's not itching at all so the vet had me hold off on the itchy pills until he actually needed them since he gave him a shot at the clinic.  So it looks like he's on the road to recovery, thankfully.

Thanks again everyone.

Glad to hear he's doing better.  Did they put him on prednisone?   If so, that'll increase their thirst.

Yes, but I haven't given him that one yet.  He had a shot at the clinic and then he's on cephalexin for the infection.  I hope that's what is causing it and it's not another problem.

Well, I thought the pooper was getting better, no signs of scratching and then bam!  Woke up this morning and overnight he gave himself a raw spot on his tail.  Geez.  So, I sprayed it with the topical spray the vet gave me and he finished off his antibiotics and started the actual itch medicine as well.  I am thinking if it was the infection, the antibiotics should have taken care of it and not have it start up again while he's taking the antibiotics.

Sometimes it can take more than one round of meds to do the trick.  Doing a scraping to make sure of what you're dealing with/treating might be in order if this continues.

Yeppers, I have to agree.  I'll call the vet in the morning if it's not better.
