You all know that I have reported that Bella knows how to get ice from the ice maker on the freezer door and she could can open all of the doors in the house by flexing them BUT I had no idea that she figured out how to use a door handle!!!! Here is the story: Every couple of days a few of my neighbors and I let our dogs play off leash together in the common area between houses and Bella has really bonded with her "pack". Great for me because she is so tired when she comes in that she falls right to sleep. Well a few nights ago we were all calling it a night but she and I were the last to go and when I went to put her on her leash she bolted to my neighbors house OPENED UP THE FRONT DOOR and walked right in LOL!!!!!! If I had not witnessed it with my own eyes I wouldn't have believed it. Now he doesn't have a knob but a lever on the handle but she figured out to press the lever and push all from watching him do it a few times. We both just laughed until tears came down from our eyes and couldn't believe how smart she was. All this at 11 1/2 months old. I can see that I'm going to have my hands full with this one. I know I can't be the only one with stories like this so please share because I was thinking that she was just a big doof but know I know its' all a facade LOL.

my boy is pretty smart.  He opens the sliding closet doors and helps himself to whatever suits his fancy. I finally caught him in the act. He head butts the door with
and then again with his head he pushes the doors open.

He has started to head butt the bathroom door open and "visit" me in the bathroom.
I guess he thinks I can't go by myself.

He counter surfs looking for people food. He knows I don't allow that...so he goes
just so far.

He knows I put his favorite monkey toy on top of the refrigerator so when he wants
it, he sits in front of the refrigerator, then when I see him, he moves his eyes toward the monkey. His body doesn't move..just the eyes.

These dogs aren't dumb at all. His mother was very smart. I can almost see him thinking.

If a gate or a door is opened, but not wide enough for Teddy to fit through, he will moan and carry on until someone opens it for him.

Sadly, he is no Rin Tin Tin.

Ummm...my guys (except the Newfie) is like H's...whine and moan if the door is not open all the way.  I think they all share one brain and it is our job to figure out who that is on any given day.

I think some people underestimate their intelligence. I can almost see them thinking.
Hman, if your dog isn't smart then how come he sits and barks until YOU get up
to get him what he wants. He's trained you hasn't he?

Poor Teddy.

Ithink Gus is really smart and can pick up new tricks almost instantly. Once he learns a trick, he never forgets. He is also good At modeling behaviors off of observation. For example, I recently got a new container with a flip lid to store his, leash. It only took him a single time of watching me to figure out how to open the lid. Now when i ask him if he is ready for his walk he runs to the container and flips up the lid for me. He also can open/ close all my doors and cabinets. Also knows how to turn on lights, open the gate, helps himself to the ice maker. To be honest, I feel like there isn't much he cant figure out. When he wants a car ride he nudges the car door handle...if only his nose was small enough to open it...I can see the frustration in his eyes.

If there is ever a time that he needs my help (like if his toy rolls under the bed, he wants in the car, or there is something he wants to show me) he runs over to me wih his ears allert, makes good eye contact for a solid 5 seconds and then trots off, looking over his shoulder to make sure Im following. He is so good at communicating with me and getting his point across. Very smart boy..

Sara,
I agree he's smart. Maybe he'd be a good therapy dog?  I think they are amazing dogs.

He is very friendly and greets strangers with a wagging tail, but to be honest, he does not enjoy being pet by new people. I take him with me to the farmers market every week as well as pet stores, the park, etc. people obviously want to pet him and get in his personal space. Gus totally welcomes it, but constantly looks to me for guidance, sometimes he yawns and refuses to sit down, which are signs that he does not necessarly enjoy it and doesn't feel confident.  I know it is good for him to be socialized often just so he stays used to meeting strangers, but don't think therapy work is for him. He is too much of a manma's boy.

I sometimes take him to rally class (mostly just to get him out of the house and keep him stemulated) and he loves it. We have also done a search and rescue class, which he LOVED. Thinking of doing a rattle snake class in a few weeks too!

Yup, same here. I tell people Trucker is too stupid to be anything but sweet. I love him but he is a moronic dog...its actually my favorite thing about him lol

Yup, Mindy.  I agree.

Teddy's stupidity is endearing.  He's like a big, dumb football player or the bouncer at your favorite college bar.  Everyone loves him and wants to be his friend.

I look at Trucker's big, dumb face and I want to be his friend.

Dumb is not a bad thing once you admit it, accept it and even embrace it.

I don't know about Trucker, but Teddy's lack of intelligence makes him the most obediant, trainable dog I've ever had.  He listens and does exactly what I want him to do.  I don't need a bright, independent dog.  I need a dog who does what is expected of him and Teddy fits that bill.

H

H~ Exactly like Trucker. He was born a perfect leash walker for me. ( not other people lol) I could take him into a crowd of orangutangs and he would be totally oblivious to them. He never pulls...or even notices things around him. I think its his deep devotion to me that makes him so obedient. His attention is constantly on me and anything I want him to do.

So I guess he is smart where it counts. But he will not step over a broom on the floor..might as well be the Great Wall of China.

I had to put hook and eye at the tops of all of my doors because Leroy can open any door in the house.. Including the front door and the bathroom door .

Some of the doors are regular door knobs and some of them are the handle type .. Doesn,t matter .... He can open all of them. He can also operate the ice cube maker on the fridge door. He willnot navigate the circular staircase though .. I guess he is too long bodied to make it down the stairs sagely and is smart enough to know it.

YES. Thay are smart!!!

We do not breed often, but we do our best to breed top quality mastiffs
with excellent pedigrees to back them up. All breedings are carefully planned to produce
the very best mastiffs, sound in both body and mind, beautiful and strong,
representing the true mastiff standard.

We fully test our dogs. We believe that a person that "just wants a pet" has a right
to own a beautiful, well bred dog that is sound and healthy
every bit as much as someone wanting a "show dog".

Lol at the broom!
Sara, what's a rattlesnake class?

Dixie is no genius except she always knows when I'm having trouble sleeping or if I'm upset then she insists on cuddling! She never gives kisses though, first dog I've owned that refuses. My other Mastiffs gave cheek kisses on command.

Sandy is my smart girl. Her nickname is "Bandit" because she can steal things off my tall counters without making a sound.

I boarded her at a kennel once when I went out of town. She was in heat and I really just felt better if she wasn't able to go in and out the doggie door at home. When I came back to pick her up, the kennel owner told me that she was SO perplexed because she came into the kennel and Sandy was in a different room (this kennel has like small bedrooms for each dog). She put her back in her own room and sure enough, the next morning Sandy was in yet another room. Finally, she trained the camera on Sandy's door. As soon as Sandy was sure she was free to be "the Bandit", she turned the door knob, let herself out of the room and proceeded to sample all the other dogs' foods that were sitting outside of their respective rooms. The owner decided it was probably better to just put all the food up and let Sandy have the hall and any room she happened to settle in....
