does anyone have experience with a ripped out toenail? Alice did her back foot, I expect the giant hole under my porch had something to do with it. Vet said soak and keep clean - not easy, her daughter Peanuts thinks she is the doc and keeps cleaning it, had to separate them. It looks like it is getting worse and I have a very weak constitution. seeing the vet tomorrow, but wondered what to expect how long to heal, operation involved - just what to expect needs to be done. help.....

Debbie,
I really don't post very often, but I have had this happen to my dog Kronk - although we had to go to the vet to have him finish pulling the nail out - he managed to catch his foot on something in the back of my old SUV - it was a bloody mess. He was just fine - it was bandaged only for a short time and the nail grew back just fine.
Good luck...... Terry

I had almost the same situation with my male Zach, he had cracked a nail and the crack went up under the skin and it got infected. The vet just pulled the nail off. We had to try (lol) to keep it cleaned and bandaged. But it grew a new nail pretty quickly with no problems. Hope all goes well!!

I just soak them with half betadine and half water, and make sure you dry it well coming in and out of the yard after washing. it heals but takes some time.

seems to be a bit better, she completely ripped out the nail bed, vet is keeping an eye on it for a couple of days just in case in needs to be amputated. It is pretty gross looking. Lots of soaking and on antibotics. These dogs her toe looked like hamberg and she isnt limping and still wanting to go for her walks... she must be in pain but doesnt show it.

Deb,
Once again, I have to be the voice of doom and gloom. This happened to my boy Yogi and when I took him to the vet, they did a cystology and sent a swab off to the lab. It turned out to be squamous cell carcinoma and he had to have his toe amputated.
Losing the toenail is a sign of cancer of the nailbed, so check it out. Like you, I just thought Yogi had caught the nail on something and ripped it out.
